Why is the Sky Blue

We see the sky as blue because of the white light that is transmitted from the sun. This is made up of a spectrum of colors.

The spectrum of colors is mixed into the Earth’s atmosphere. It scatters the blue wavelengths all around. This makes it visible to the human eye.

Understanding this would require the understanding of light. Light either from the sun or from fire consists of all the colors of the rainbow. These colors carry light energies.

These light energies travel in waves. Some light waves travel in short bumpy waves. Examples would be violet and blue. Some light waves also travel in long sluggish waves. Examples would be red and orange.

The human eye has three different types of color receptors or ‘cones’. These are found in the retina. These color receptors respond strongly to the wavelengths of the primary colors.

The primary colors are red, green and blue. The colors the human eye sees vary. It would depend on how these receptors are stimulated.

Light waves collide with various gas molecules and particles of the air. This happens once the sunlight enters the Earth’s atmosphere. It will create a scattering effect.

This effect is famously known as the ‘Rayleigh Scattering’. All colors are scattered by air molecules. The blue and violet lights are scattered the most.

It is scattered in the atmosphere more because it has a shorter wavelength. This makes blue and violet light scattered ten times more than red and yellow light.

Violet light has the shortest wavelength of all the colors. It doesn’t get scattered much because there isn’t enough violet light in the atmosphere. The sun sends out much more blue light rather than violet. This is one reason why the sky is blue.

Another reason would be with the human eye and the how our vision works. Our eyes respond more sensitively to the blue light rather than the violet light. Thus, allowing us to see the sky blue.
