Here are some simple worry free ways to install your own kitchen cabinets:

  1. First unwrap and check your kitchen cabinets. Remove the doors and drawers to prevent any possible damage because they can be scratched during installation.

It is easier to install a cabinet without any doors on it. Put a number or marking on the components as you unpack them. Use masking tape and place it on each door and drawer. This will make it easier for you to match and assemble the cabinets later on.

You may also cover the doors and drawers with dry clothes. This is done while it is stored in a safe place.

  2. Measure the size of the cabinets. Plan the location where you will place it. Use a pencil to lightly mark the target area of installation.

Use a level to perfectly draw a parallel line across the wall. You will also need to measure three inches from the floor. Afterwards, draw another line up to the first parallel line.

This is done to check your floor’s high point. Measure also about 34 1/2 inches from parallel line. Draw a level line across the wall to find the cabinet’s top base. This will help you know the height and space appropriate for your base cabinet.

  3. Find the wall studs and mark their positions. Mark a straight vertical line between its top and bottom. This will help in finding the stud’s center.

Place a temporary ledger board into the wall. This will serve as a support base of the cabinets. This should be done before installing them.

  4. Copy the lay-out drawn on the studs. Transfer it at the back of the cabinets. Start also pre-drilling the holes at the nailing strip points.

You can then assemble the cabinet. Hang the cabinets on the wall. Install first the corner cabinet. Make sure it is tightly screwed to the wall.

Screws should be long enough to hold the cabinet. They should also penetrate the studs. The measurement should be about an inch and a half to securely enter the studs.

Inspect top and side levels of the cabinet. This will ensure it is properly attach to the wall.

  5. Assemble and install the base cabinets. This is similar to the installation of the wall cabinets. Do the same techniques with the base cabinets.

Remember to place first the corner cabinet. This will give you room for adjustment. The last steps would be to square up the other base cabinets. Move it parallel to the wall cabinets. Use a chisel or knife to trim any excess material from the shims.
