Most people think of yodeling as the songs of leiderhosen-wearing folks high up in the Alps, accompanied by alpenhorns, and triggering the occasional avalanche from the slopes of the Matterhorn.  Yodeling may seem hilarious for some, but you can get some appreciative smiles from the audience if you do it right.  Here are some tips to help you yodel the right way.

What is Yodeling?

Yodeling sounds are found all over the world, but it is especially prevalent in the Alpine regions.  Yodeling was a skill developed by the people in the region to communicate across mountains.  Yodeling served practical purposes while on the slopes of the mountains, especially for emergencies.  Over time, though, yodeling developed into an art form and a style of entertainment popular in contests, county fairs, and even parties.

Yodeling uses the facilities of the human body to shift tones and pitches quickly.  It takes a lot of practice to learn how to yodel properly, but anyone with a voice and a strong pair of lungs can get it done.

Steps

Yodeling is no different from singing, but instead of keeping a consistent pitch and tone, the singer shifts quickly between octaves and pitches.  To yodel, follow these simple steps:

  1. Stand in such a way that you can take in the most air, and vocalize in the best possible way.  Stick your chest out, keep your stomach tucked in, and keep your back straight.
  2. The key in yodeling is to move between a low pitch and a high pitch in regular, rapid succession.  The lower pitch comes from the diaphragm, and the higher pitch comes from the throat.
  3. The trick to good yodeling is to use the word “Yo-del-e-hi-hoo” to your advantage as you move pitches.  The syllable “Yo” can start with a high pitch, followed by a medium pitch, then a low pitch, and finished off with a high pitch and a medium pitch.
  4. One way to learn how to yodel is through a professional instructor, or to practice at an area where you will not make it inconvenient for other people.  Try a hillside, a meadow, or a cliff, where you can keep the experience authentic.

Yodeling may seem strange or even hilarious to some people, but there’s nothing wrong with spreading a bit of joy and good cheer to people with a singing style that’s centuries old.  With these tips, you can make up your own yodeling routines and entertain guests, or even win yodeling contests.
