How to Whistle with your Fingers
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 by ElaineIf you want to catch the attention of someone else from a distance, you can easily whistle with your fingers instead of shouting out loud. This common, but hard-to-perfect activity is very useful, but learning how to do it can be dumbfounding. Don’t worry, here are a few tips that might help you out.
What You’ll Need:
- Fingers
- Patience
Procedure:
- Blow air from your mouth lightly, with your lips slightly closed. With this position, you can perform a quieter whistle. Train yourself to get used to this position, so your lips will be used to it. When you get the hang of it, move on to the next step.
- Decide which fingers you’re going to use for the whistle. For many people, the thumb and the index finger is the easiest option, while for others, it’s the thumb and forefinger.
- Hold up your hand, and form an “A-OK” sign with the two fingers, but leaving a small gap in between them, at least 1/8 apart.
- Put your fingers inside your mouth, angling them slightly upwards. You don’t have to put them in all the way, just enough to close the lips over the fingers. Keep the 1/8 inch gap, so air can still flow in between your fingers. Stretch your lips tightly over them.
- Position your tongue. It should be pressed behind your bottom teeth row, at the back of the lower jaw. If you feel a small bump or ledge in your mouth, it’s in place.
- Inhale deeply, keep your lips pressed tightly, then blow into the V shaped gap your fingers formed. To guide the air towards that direction, use your tongue. You should blow lightly first, to make a faint whistle. Afterwards, blow more air to create a louder whistle.
- Don’t be disheartened when your first try doesn’t produce any sound. Keep practicing and you’ll soon succeed.
It might seem simple, but it can be pretty hard. With a bit of patience, though, you’ll succeed. Put your fingers in your mouth, and whistle loud and proud!
