How to Wear a Veil
Posted on August 13th, 2009 by aileenWomen dream of having a perfect wedding. This is a very special occasion that signifies a transition from single to married life and the coming together of two individuals. Wedding preparations may be a bit tasking, but it’s also the most exciting part of getting married. So you’ve chosen the best wedding gown. The next task is to find the perfect veil.
There are numerous types of wedding veils and various ways of wearing one. Decide on the type of veil you want. How you wear your veil will depend on how you’ll be styling your hair on that day. So before you say “I do”, here are some tips you can follow in wearing your wedding veil.
Hair Up
If you’re planning an updo, wearing a veil won’t be much of a problem.
- After styling your hair, position the comb with its teeth down.
- Carefully push the comb down. Placing the comb right in front or just above your hair bun will hide the comb perfectly, unless of course if you’re wearing a designed comb that’s meant to be seen.
- Use bobby pins to securely hold the veil in place.
- If you’re wearing a tiara, position it at least 45° in front of your veil. Make sure not to leave an awkward space between the veil and your tiara.
Hair Down
Most brides choose to wear their hair up because it makes it easier to place the veil.If you want to wear a veil with our hair down, here are some tips you can follow.
- Brush your hair. Use a hair straightening iron to have perfectly straight hair or a curling iron to create a few strands of curls on the sides of your face.
- Make a couple of flat curls in the middle of your head with bobby pins.
- Slip the veil comb over the flat curls.
- Use bobby pins to secure the veil in place.
- You can also opt for a simple half pony and slip the veil comb on it.
What you should know
- There are different types of veil. Choose the one that complements your wedding gown.
- Blusher is a type of veil worn over your face. The front part should fall a couple of inches below the collarbone.
- Fly away veil is a less formal kind of veil. This veil should extend from the top of your head to your shoulders.
- Birdcage veil falls just over your chin.
- Elbow length veil is measured from your head down to your shoulders. You can choose to have multiple layers. Each layer can be about a couple of inches longer than the other.
- Fingertip veil extends down to your fingertips.
- Chapel length veil is best worn with a gown that has a train. The length of the veil should be 6-12 inches longer than the gown’s train.
- Semi-cathedral and cathedral veils are worn like chapel length veils. These 3 kinds of veils can be removed after the ceremony as it may be hard for the bride to move around the reception with the veil on.
- In measuring the length of your veil, don’t forget the kind of hairstyle you want to have. You may need to add a few extra inches if you’ll be wearing your hair up.
- If there are bead works on the back of your gown, the veil should end at least a couple of inches above or below the embroidery.
- A wire comb secures the veil better than a plastic comb.
Having the perfect gown and veil will make you feel like a queen when you walk down the aisle. Don’t forget to walk with grace and full of love for the man waiting by the altar.
