Before the Internet, watching movies was all about going to the cinema or the theater, buying snacks, and finding the best possible seat for the latest full-length feature.  Thanks to high-speed Internet connections, you can now watch your favorite movies online at a fraction of the cost of a movie ticket.  Here are some ways to watch movies online.

Precautions

Whether it’s a movie from the early days of cinema or the latest film to hit Hollywood, all movies are subject to copyright.  Copyright means that the producers or distributors of a particular film own all the rights to exhibit the video in public.  Most movies shown online are digital files shared by fans of a film, and may violate existing copyright laws.  Here are some reminders that you should always remember when watching movies online:

  • Do not distribute video files through CD, DVD, or any other means.  You may be violating copyright laws.
  • All video files uploaded and posted on the Internet are not meant for public exhibition.
  • Most sites that host videos will allow you to watch a short clip of the video, usually a few seconds to a minute long.  You may need to pay a small fee to watch the complete videos.

Streaming Video

Streaming video sites like YouTube, Crunchyroll, and Daily Motion contain streaming data of some of the most popular movies uploaded by users.  In video streaming, the data is transmitted from a host or a number of peers on the network to your computer.  Most of these movies come in segments to make streaming faster and easier.

To best enjoy streaming video, you need a very fast Internet connection.  Buffering the videos can take some time; if you have a really fast Internet connection, you can open multiple segments of the video stream at a time, provided you don’t eat up too much of your network’s resources.

Movie Downloads

Another way to watch movies online is to download them first, then watch the videos later.  Movie downloads are especially convenient if your Internet connection is not fast enough for streaming.  Here are two ways to download videos online:

  • Hosted videos. Some sites have very fast servers that contain many videos to choose from and to download, usually for a fee.  The problem is that hosted videos take a very long time to download, depending on how fast both connections are from the server to the client.
  • Peer-to-peer file sharing, like LimeWire and BitTorrent, is the most popular way to download movies.  You simply open a file-sharing program, download a torrent, look for seeders, and wait for your movie to finish downloading.

Thanks to the Internet, watching movies online becomes a very awesome experience, whether it’s the latest Hollywood hit or a timeless classic from years back.  Yet even if you do like watching movies from a computer, the best way to watch a movie is still to enjoy it with popcorn at a theater near you.
