How To Use Silicone Caulk
Posted by monsterguideHow To Use Silicone Caulk
Introduction
Whether you are building or repairing, caulking can help to complete a job. As a waterproof sealant or filler, it functions by making objects waterproof. Whether you have to fill tiny holes or cracks in wood, drywall, or brick, caulking is useful. It can help to keep warm or cool air inside, and bug and dampness outside. Today, silicon-based caulk is one of the major types of caulking on the market. Like other construction materials, it should be used in a particular manner.
Required Materials
- Dishwashing liquid
- Terry cloth towels
- Turpentine
- Utility blades
Instructions
Caulking Basics. Several varieties of caulk are available in various colors and materials. Caulk can only fill in gaps that are roughly ΒΌ” inches deep; Larger gaps must be filled with another material, and then caulk can be used to seal the surface.
Super Silicon. The advantage of silicon-based caulk is that it adheres to virtually everything. Thus, it generally performs the best among the different varieties of caulk that are available. Because it is not water-based, silicon-based caulk is far sturdier than acrylic caulk. Silicon caulking is ideal to seal around areas such as bathtubs and showers. In particular, silicon “tub and tile” caulk is a special type of caulk with mildew preventitive. This variety of silicon caulk should be used in areas that become wet. However, it should never be used in regions that contact drinking water or food. Silicon-latex caulking can vary in quality and has a few notable drawbacks. For instance, it is more difficult to apply and cannot be painted.
Shoot To Seal (or Fill). Two types of containers can be used when applying silicon caulk. You can apply caulk in squeeze tubes directly onto a surface. However, some cylinders require a caulk gun in order to be used. First, cut off the end of a new caulk tube. Then use a narrow metal rod to punch the seal of a new cylinder of caulk. After the cylinder of caulk has been placed in the caulk gun, you can pump caulk onto the project surface. This process is known as “beading” the caulk. A moist rag should be used to even the surface after the caulk has been applied.
A Silicon Mess. While silicone caulk is tougher, it is also more difficult to clean up. However, it can be done in the following way: Use a terry cloth towel to absorb the wet caulking. Then use a solvent (i.e. turpentine or naphtha soap) to wipe up the stains and drops. A utility blade can then be used to strip or scrape away treated silicone caulk from even surfaces. Finally, dishwashing liquid and water should be used on cloth or carpeting. Your fingers can rub the materials or fibers until the caulk becomes free. Then it can be removed. Remember that when cleaning up silicon caulk, it usually hardens within eight hours so messes should be cleaned up immediately. And always remember that solvents should be tested on a hidden portion of a cloth or carpeting before applying them. This will prevent ruining your favorite curtain or rug.
