Many laptop users want to stay up-to-date with the programs and hardware they have on their laptops.  Every quarter, computer manufacturers introduce and market new laptops to consumers.  Keeping up with the technology is needed to keep your laptop compliant with many programs, standards, and releases.  Here are some ways to upgrade a laptop.

Hardware Upgrades

Unlike desktop computers, it is very difficult to perform a hardware upgrade on the laptop.  The size of the laptop chassis, case, and the structure and design of the motherboard can all pose a problem when upgrading a laptop.  The design of the laptop means that the amount of hardware upgrades you can perform on your laptop is very limited.

Most laptop computer manufacturers recommend that a hardware upgrade should only be performed by a qualified technician.  There are some hardware upgrades, however, that you can perform on a laptop:

  • Hard drive replacement
  • Replacement of optical drives
  • Adding memory
  • Upgrading mobile audio and video cards

Software Upgrades

The most convenient way to upgrade your laptop is to upgrade and update software.  Software and operating systems are quite user-friendly when it comes to upgrades.  The only limitation that you have is hardware compatibility, because some programs may not work (or work with a reduced capacity and performance) with older hardware devices.  Here are some of the software upgrades that you could perform with your laptop:

  • Updating your programs for patches is a great way to keep up with the latest trends and updates for your existing software.
  • Installation and re-installation. Some programs may no longer have the support you need just in case they fail.  You may also upgrade your current software as long as the system requirements match that of your laptop.
Upgrading is an essential part of computer maintenance.  With these tips, you can upgrade your old laptop to match the performance and value of some advanced new laptops sold on the market.
