How to Turn the Windows Firewall Off
Posted on May 5th, 2009 by PaulWindows Firewall is one of your computer’s basic defenses against computer viruses. The problem is, it can sometimes interfere with your internet connection, especially for local networks. It blocks the data coming from your modem or router, keeping you off the internet. In this case, you must turn the Windows firewall off to go back online.
Through Control Panel
Control Panel gives you access to the settings of your computer’s major applications. It gives you two options for switching Windows Firewall off.
- Windows Firewall Icon
- Security Center
By accessing any of the two locations, you’ll be given an option to switch off the firewall, plus other firewalls installed on your computer.
Procedure:
- Click Start, which opens up a bunch of options.
- Select Control Panel.
- Look for either Windows Firewall or Security Center.
- If you clicked on Windows Firewall, place a mark in the circle beside Off then click Okay.
- If you clicked on Security Center, click on Windows Firewall. Place a mark in the circle beside Off then click Okay.
Instead of using Windows Firewall, install a powerful third-party firewall, like Bit Defender or NetPro. Windows Firewall is a default program for all Windows users, which means virus makers are ready for it from the get go. Yes, it can block come viruses and spyware, but it won’t offer much protection. You might as well trust a reputable firewall program.
Through the Systray
The Systray or the System Tray is a tiny placeholder for icons that provides easy access to some of the most useful programs on your computer. It is located on the lower right corner of the screen, right beside the clock. In the default settings of some computers, the windows firewall icon is found on the Systray.
Procedure:
- Check the icons beside the clock on the lower right portion of the screen. If you can’t see the icons, click on the left arrow beside the clock, which reveals the tray’s contents.
- Slowly run the cursor through each icon. Read the labels.
- If you find an icon labeled Windows Firewall, right click on it.
- Select Turn Off Windows Firewall.
There are cases when the Systray shows that Windows Firewall is switched on when it’s actually turned off, and vice-versa. You can go to Control Panel just to be sure.
