There are many ways that a cookie crumbles, even if they are Internet cookies.  You may have heard of  computer users who recommend that you turn off cookies in your browser, but there are many websites that rely on these small text values for you to be able to access them correctly.  Here are ways for you to enable cookies on your browser.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are text values composed of name-pairs containing data processed by a website.  Most cookies come from online shopping and auction sites, or websites that promote premium content through subscriptions.  Some websites automatically “drop” cookies into your browser cache when you access them.  Cookies are also used by some sites to track down subscriptions; for shopping sites, cookies may contain the text values that define the contents of your shopping cart.

Cookies themselves are not dangerous, but having too many cookies can put an unnecessary load on your browser cache.  Some cookies may also compromise your computer or network security, especially if you’re using a corporate network connection.  In many cases, though, you have to turn on cookies to maximize the access of Web content.

Enabling Cookies

Most browsers are configured to accept cookies from trusted sites by default, but you may need to manually disable some security features of your browser to enable cookies.  Here’s how you can remove cookies from four of the most popular browsers used in computers today:

Internet Explorer

  1. Click the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar, and click “Internet Options.”
  2. Click the “Privacy” tab.
  3. A scroll bar on the dialog box can be moved up and down to set the privacy settings of your computer.  To allow all cookies to be loaded to your cache, move the scroll bar to the lowest setting (”Accept All Cookies”).
  4. Save all changes.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar, and click “Options.”
  2. Click the “Privacy” tab.
  3. Check the boxes for cookies.  You may want to set different options for certain websites, or set the length of time the cookies are kept in your cache.
  4. Save all changes.

Opera

  1. Click the “Tools” menu on the Menu bar, and click “Preferences.”
  2. Click the “Advanced” tab.
  3. Click the “Cookies” option on the dialog box.
  4. Click “Accept All Cookies,” and set your preferences.
  5. Save all changes.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the customization controls on the right-hand corner of the browser (the button with the wrench icon).
  2. Click “Options,” and click the tab labeled “Under the Hood.”
  3. Scroll down the dialog box and click “Accept All Cookies.”
  4. Save all changes.
Cookies may seem dangerous, but not all of them are meant to compromise your network security.  With these steps, you can enable cookies on your browser and maximize your browsing experience.
