Are the vertical blinds you purchased too long for your windows? Before you think about throwing them out or replacing them, don’t, because there’s an easy way to solve this dilemma, and you won’t even need to leave the house. Here’s how to trim your vertical blinds to make them fit your windows.

What You’ll Need:

Procedure:

  1. Remove all your vertical blinds. Hold the blind, push it up as high as you can possibly take it, then slide it sideways, until it comes off. If it doesn’t come off, check the plastic hook. Pry it open, sliding the blind sidewards, while leaving just one of the blinds up.
  2. The remaining blind is what you’ll use to measure how much you’re going to trim off. Make sure it’s hanging properly, so you’ll have an accurate measurement. With the pencil, lightly mark off the place where you’re going to cut the rest of the blinds to. When you’re sure you’ve measured right, take that blind down, too.
  3. Label the blind you’ve marked as the master copy. Don’t use different blinds for reference when cutting the length, otherwise the difference between the lengths will increase.
  4. Take the blinds to a  place with a flat surface. A table, desk or even the floor will do. Get the dry square. Lay down another blind on top of the master copy, making sure the sides are even. The end of the top blind should be lined up with the mark you placed on the bottom blind. You can use the dry square for this, to make sure the sides are even.
  5. Carefully, draw the line across, using the pencil. Make sure you only draw a very light mark. Follow this mark as you cut the blinds, using the scissors. You should also make sure that the square line you cut is straight, otherwise the bottom will be very uneven after you’ve hung the blinds.
  6. Repeat this procedure with the other blinds.

A Few Tips

  • If your vertical blinds are white, the marks you make on the blinds should be very light, because you have to clean them off after the procedure. Just use the pencil’s eraser or rubbing alcohol, if that doesn’t work.
  • Wear safety goggles during the procedure. Doing this isn’t very dangerous, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
  • Handle the scissors properly.

Blinds that fit windows snugly look better than those that trail on the floor. Trim yours appropriately, and you’ll find it absolutely gratifying.
