How to Trapeze
Posted on August 24th, 2009 by aileenFascinated by those fabulous trapeze performers you see flying from one bar to the next? If you think you’ve got the guts to try out this one of a kind activity, here are some things you have to know before you start flying in the air.
Types of Trapeze
Static Trapeze
The bar is held in place in this kind of trapeze. What you want to do when on a static trapeze is move and balance yourself on the rope with ease and grace.
Swinging Trapeze
Almost all of trapeze tricks starts with a swinging trapeze. To be able to do the other tricks, you have to master this simple maneuver first.
Flying Trapeze
A flying trapeze can be performed alone or with a catcher. When performed alone, somebody from the other end throws another trapeze bar at you as you release the one you’re holding on to. When performed with a catcher, the movements should be performed in perfect timing, otherwise, the catcher might not be able to catch you as you let go of the bar.
Basic Trapeze Moves
Two Handed Departures
This kind of maneuver is advised for beginners as it gives them the safety of holding on to the bar with both hands. Hold the bar with both hands and keep your arms straight. Start with your feet on the edge of the platform and push away from the edge.
Bullet Drop
After jumping off the platform, let go of the bar and let your self drop on the net. Remember to fall on your back to avoid injuries
Swing
Before learning any advance move, you have to practice this basic maneuver. There are 2 kinds of swing, the basic and the advance swing. The basic swing, unlike an advance swing, doesn’t have a force out.
- To do the basic swing, which is called a “tic toc”, start with your feet on the edge of the platform. When you’ve release yourself on the platform, push your hips forward while keeping your legs at the back. Imagine making an arch with your body; that’s how this swing should look.
- Do a force out when performing and advance swing. After leaving the platform, swing your legs behind you and then bring them forward. Raise your legs as much as you could. You can either bend your arms or keep them straight when throwing your body from the bar.
- After doing a force out or the basic swing movement, bring you legs forward again and forcefully swing them backwards as you reach the platform.
Knee Hand
After swinging forward, raise your knees in front of you. Lift your legs and put them over the bar. The bar should be positioned under your knees. As you go for a back swing, carefully let go of your hold on the bar. Wait for a catcher to be near you and then extend your arms and grab the catcher’s hands. Extend your legs to let go of your trapeze bar.
