Getting a suspicious phone from a stranger call can be a sign of danger.  Someone might be interested in what you or your home has to offer and the stranger’s intentions may not be pleasant.  In this case, tracing the phone call comes as an important matter.  You’ll have an idea on where the call was made and possibly, who made the phone call.  Knowing how to trace calls is essential, especially if you live in an area where the crime rate is pretty high.

Contact Your Phone Service Provider

When you receive a strange or threatening phone call, take down the number of the caller.  Call your phone service company and report the incident.  Relay what the unknown caller told you then express a sense of urgency regarding the situation.  The company, in response, can trace the call and figure out who made it.  if they are not permitted to, they can call the authorities and report the incident.  The unknown number will then be given by the company to the police during their investigation.

*57 for Verizon and Cox Subscribers

Service providers Cox and Verizon allow users to view unknown numbers through their mobile phones and land phones (Verizon only).  By inputting *57 for mobile phones or 1157 for land phones, the number will be traced by the company.  The information will then be relayed to customer service.  Call the hotline number of your phone company, so you will be directed to the right department.  State your case to the agent, who in turn, will provide you info regarding the number.  Once you have the number, report the incident to the authorities.

Search the Number Online

If you were able to note down the number of the mysterious caller, you can search it online.  People list their contact numbers down on social networking sites and other public profiles.  Some even post numbers on online forums.  If you’re lucky, you might find information about the number when you look it up on Google.  Zero in on the caller’s identity then call the police or retaliate with a prank call, if it’s from one of your buddies.

Hire an Investigator

Hiring a private investigator won’t only lead you to the caller’s number, you will certainly know his or her identity.  You can even ask the investigator to monitor his or her activities, if ever you’re planning to retaliate, which isn’t really advisable.  For about 200 bucks, you will know everything there is to know about your unknown caller.  His or her fate, at that point, will be in your hands.

Tracing a phone call is necessary, given the possibility of crime in almost any area.  It is a means of safety and security, so knowing your options is definitely a must.
