Wearing a turban is a common practice among men in many countries, like India and Saudi Arabia. It’s a sacred headpiece, and should be given due consideration when worn. Although its appearance seems pretty simple, tying it can become a complicated process, especially if you don’t know how. There are numerous complicated ways to tie a turban, but if you’re a beginner, here’s a simple method that will work for you.

What You’ll Need:

  • Long fabric for turban (at least 2 1/ 2 feet long)
  • Turban cap
  • Hanging jewelry or accent scarves (optional)

Procedure:

  1. If you have long hair, tie it in a bun first before you start the wrapping process. Having stray strands of hair hanging from the turban is not a pretty sight. You can also wear a turban cap. This is a rounded headpiece used to keep the turban and hair in place.

  3. Fold the cloth in half, lengthwise. Lay it over your head’s top, with the folded part on your forehead, and the two sides hanging down your front and past your shoulders like a couple of pigtails.
  4. Grab each of the cloth’s length that’s hanging by your earlobes, then twist them tightly. It should be tight enough so the turban will be firmly secure on your head. Make sure you don’t twist it too loosely or tightly, otherwise, it won’t fit.
  5. Slide your hand ten inches down each twisted end’s length, then pull then behind the head. Smoothly switch the hands, overlaying one end over the other end. Bring the two ends forward to the side of your head, just above the ears.
  6. Cross the two lengths of cloth over your forehead, wrapping them going to the back. Make sure you create the desired turban tying height in front. Tie the length of cloths like you tie shoelaces, then tuck their remaining ends inside the base wrap. If you think the ends are too long, wrap them once more around the head.
  7. Simple is better, but if you want to decorate your turban, just hang some jewelry around it or twist accent scarves through the base wrap.

Some Tips:

  • Keep practicing. The more you’re used to it, the better your turban will look.
  • Experiment with the more complicated methods of turban tying.
  • Unless you’re used to it already, just wear a turban for short periods of time, otherwise the hair at the top of your forehead will start to hurt.

Turbans are worn as a holy garment, so make sure you tie it properly. Just follow these easy steps first, then move on to the more complicated ways of tying.
