How to Style a Mohawk
Posted on April 29th, 2009 by ElaineA mohawk is a cool and unique hairstyle that is worn by men and women alike. It rocks, but only if it’s styled properly. Otherwise, you’ll end up with unkempt locks that fall down on either side of your face. Here’s how to style a mohawk properly.
What You’ll Need:
- Water and shampoo
- Towel
- Comb
- Hair dryer
- Gel-type, water soluble school glue
- Hair iron
- Hairspray
- Pomade or hair sculpting wax
Method One: Using Pomade Or Wax
This is the conventional way of styling a mohawk. It’s pretty easy, but you have to do it properly, or else you’ll end up with an odd-looking hairstyle.
- Take a shower, and wash your hair thoroughly. Working with clean, oil-free hair is better. Get rid of the excess water by towel-drying your hair.
- Get your comb, and use it to section out and part the hair that you’re going to style. Comb your hair thoroughly, making sure there are no tangles.
- Put some pomade or sculpting wax in your hands, then generously apply to your hair, covering all parts.
- Get a large portion of your hair, and comb it upwards. Keep a good hold in it, using one hand, so it stays up.
- Liberally spray the section you’re holding up with hairspray, making sure you get all sides.
- Blow dry the hair section you’re holding up. Make sure you have it upwards straight. After all, nobody likes a crooked mohawk.
- Heat your hair iron at its highest level. When it’s hot enough, use it to clamp the hair portion, moving it upwards, from the scale to the tip. Don’t panic if you hear a sizzling sound; That’s just the iron coming into contact with the pomade or wax.
- Keep spraying and ironing, until all of the strands in the section are standing independently.
- Repeat for the other hair portions.
Method Two: Using School Glue
It sounds strange, but regular school glue can be used to make a cool mohawk stand up. Here’s how to use it.
- Wash your hair and dry it thoroughly. Remember, the school glue you’re using is water-soluble, so it’ll become diluted if it comes in contact with wet hair. Make sure your mohawk’s mostly dry.
- Put a generous amount of glue in your hands, then apply all over your mohawk. If you think you’ve got too much hair to work on all at once, divide your hair into portions, moving along the mohawk, making sure the hair portions blend nicely.
- Sit down and hang your head upside down. Using a comb, make it as straight as you can. Your glue is probably thickening, and you’ll have an easier time styling the mohawk.
- With your head still hanging down, use a blow dryer to quicken the drying process.
- Once the glue is hard, you’re ready to go. Just make sure you wash it before you go to bed at night.
A Few Reminders:
- If you want a fanned out look, use a fine comb. If you want your mohawk to be chunky, use a chunky, big-toothed comb.
- Wash your hair regularly. Styling products and glue can damage it, leading to problems like hair loss and dandruff.
- Frequent exposure to high temperatures, like blow-drying or ironing can also destroy your locks.
If you want to sport a mohawk and look cool, you have to style it the right way. Follow these tips and end up with a smashing and unique look for everyone to admire!
