How to Squeeze Fresh Orange Juice
Posted on August 31st, 2009 by ElaineThere are days when water isn’t enough to quench your thirst, and you’ll find yourself reaching for a refreshing bottle of soda. Why settle for that when you can get a healthy and delicious, glass of orange juice? Grab several oranges and follow these simple steps.
What You’ll Need:
- Fresh ripe oranges
- Sharp knife
- Glass
- Strainer
- Juicer (optional)
- Sugar to sweeten (optional)
- Ice
- Pitcher
- Microwave
- Boiling water and bowl
Procedure:
- Wash the oranges, removing all traces of dirt and grime on its surface. How many you use depends on how much orange juice you want. For an eight-ounce glass, two oranges will be enough. You should also wash your hands properly, since you’ll be using these throughout the juicing process.
- Don’t use orange that just came from the refrigerator. As much as possible, your oranges should be at room temperature or warmer, so it will make more juice and will be easier to squeeze. You can warm oranges by putting them in a microwave. Poke the skin with a fork, but don’t go all the way to the flesh. Microwave them for 20 to 30 seconds. Another tactic is by putting them in a bowl and pouring boiling water all over them. (For more information on microwaves, read Microwaves)
- Before you start cutting the oranges, soften them up first. When they’re cool to the touch, use the palm of your hand to roll them on a solid surface, applying a bit of pressure on them. Keep rolling the orange until you feel its flesh soften; this makes juicing easier. Squeezing it to loosen the inside also works well.
- Once you’ve rolled all the oranges you need, use a sharp knife to cut them in half.
- Hold one half of an orange half-tightly over the glass or the pitcher, then squeeze the orange. If you don’t want the pulp and the seeds to get mixed in the juice, hold a strainer over the container. Keep squeezing rotating the orange in your hand, a few times, until no more juice comes out.
- You can also use a juicer to do the job. Just put one orange half over the juicer then twist the orange to remove its juice. The juicer has a container underneath it that catches the juice, but leaves most of the pulp and seeds out. If you want the pulp, just scoop them out then add to the juice.
- Repeat the procedure for the remaining oranges.
- Chill the orange juice in the fridge before drinking it. If it’s too sour for you, add a bit of sugar, although it’s healthier not to.
