How to Sponge Paint a Wall
Posted on September 24th, 2009 by aileenDesigning your wall is one way of adding character to a boring room. One of the many ways you can do is sponge painting. Here are some steps you can follow to sponge paint a wall.
Things You’ll Need:
- Base paint
- Top coat
- Faux glaze
- Paint roller
- Natural sea sponge
- Bucket
Steps:
- Prepare your work area. Clear the wall and your working space so that you’ll be able to move freely.
- Use a drop cloth to cover the floor and other things that may be splattered on by paint.
- Select the color combination you like. Having a color combination that don’t blend well with each other will create an unsightly blotchy look. Try your chosen colors on a piece of board before working on your wall.
- Apply the base paint on your wall.
- Make a glaze by combining a part of your top coat with 4 parts of faux glaze. Adding more glaze will make it more transparent. To achieve a darker top coat, add less amount of faux glaze.
- Dip your natural sea sponge in the glaze and wring out the excess glaze.
- Start on one corner of your wall. Gently press the sponge on the area. Be careful not to give a lot pressure to avoid putting too much glaze on the wall.
- Turn the sponge on the surface to achieve a random look.
- Regularly dip your sponge in the bucket to put enough glaze on the wall.
- Stand back frequently to see your work. Check for missed areas. Make sure that all areas have the same amount of glaze.
Tips:
- Here are some choices you can use as base paint.
- Semi- gloss
- Eggshell
- Satin
- Flat
- Work on one area at a time.
- Use a small sponge to touch up corners.
- Don’t forget to wear gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands.
- Use a primer first if you’re painting on walls that have been painted with oil-based paint.
Add texture and hide wall blemishes by sponge painting your wall. Make sure to use the right colors and have enough glaze.
