How to Spend Quality Time with Your Family
Posted on March 24th, 2009 by ElaineWhen everything fails, and the world turns its back on you, there are a few people who you can always count on: your family. They love you unconditionally, so it’s only right that you allot some of your precious time for them. Here are some simple, but fun ideas to do just that.
What You’ll Need:
- Time
- The whole family - Everyone must be present!
Have Dinner Together
The family that eats together, stays together. Bonding over mealtimes is a great activity you all can try. Eating together is a very simple way to interact, and yet it requires commitment and family involvement. As much as possible, try to go home in time for dinner every night. Make sure everyone is present. If everyone is just too busy to come home early every night, you can try to have just one or two family dinners a week. Pick a night or nights when everyone’s schedule is free. During the meal, you can talk about the day’s events, and what each family member has been up to.
To further involvement, everyone can also help out when preparing the dinner. Mom and dad can cook and bake the main course, while the teens can prepare the dessert. Younger kids can set the table.
It’s also okay to eat out every now and then. If you discover a newly-opened restaurant in town, ask everyone if they’d all like to have dinner there instead.
Go On A Vacation
Sometimes, being cooped at home can be boring, even if you try to liven up the atmosphere. One of the best ways to bond and spend time is by going on vacation trips. On a weekend when everyone is free, plan an out-of-town family vacation. Go to the beach or to the mountains. Visit other cities. This might require you to spend a lot of money, though, so just do this every once in a while.
Spontaneous Outings Are The Best
Not doing anything this weekend? If everyone’s at home, then invite them out and go for a road trip! Or maybe you can all go to an amusement park or to the zoo. Spontaneous outings and get-togethers are more exciting than planned ones because you never can tell what’s going to happen.
One good idea for a spontaneous trip is going on a picnic. If it’s a beautiful day, pack some sandwiches and go with your family to a beautiful park. You can play frisbees, fly kites or just hang around and exchange funny stories. It’s a great way to bond.
Get A Family Hobby
This works great for families who have the same interests. For example, if you all love plants, work together on your garden. If you all like watching movies, rent DVDs and have movie nights. Love music? Form a band! Not only do you spend quality time, but you also get to do things you enjoy the most.
Do Something Special
Even if you can’t always give them your precious time, there are many simple things you can do to show your family that you care. For example, you can get up early and prepare a special breakfast for them. Everyone rushes in the morning, and chances are you won’t get to spend too much time at the breakfast table. Even so, if your family remembers how you woke up early to painstakingly cook them a delicious meal, they’ll know that your trying to reach out, and will appreciate the gesture.
Other Tips
- For parents with young kids: one great way to bond is to read them bedtime stories. Make this an evening routine.
- For parents with teens: when your children are at their puberty stage, you might find it difficult to bond with them. To solve this, get to know their interests. It’ll help you understand their personalities better so you can reach out.
- For moms and dads: Spend some quality time alone with each other. Go on a date, like to the movies or to a romantic dinner.
Family should always come first. Let your loved ones know how much you care by giving them your time. Your bond will grow closer, and you’ll learn to love and appreciate each other more.
