How to Sew a Tapestry
Posted on April 21st, 2009 by PaulTapestry is the age-old form of needlework, in which figures and scenarios are created or recreated on fabric. Just like paintings, the tiniest details can be sewn in this form of sewing. A tapestry stitch, also known as the continental stitch, is used to make intricate impressions. Upon learning how to apply it with tapestry patterns, you can sew fine images on your preferred medium.
Selecting a Pattern to Replicate
Sewing images without following a pattern is a skill reserved for expert tapestry makers. As a beginner, you should begin by following a simple pattern. Find an image with basic shapes and a few colors on the internet. You can also find a pattern by taking pictures of objects or scenes at home. For now, you should settle for the simplest ones. You’ll get the chance to follow harder patterns as you improve.
Trace the Pattern on a Tapestry Cloth
When you have settled on a pattern, the next step is to sketch the outline on a tapestry cloth. Use a black marker to recreate the pattern on the fabric. Trace or copy carefully, otherwise you might commit mistakes when stitching. With the pattern outlined, you will simply provide the right colors for each of the shapes marked on the tapestry cloth.
If you have trouble sketching the pattern, you can download ready-made ones on the internet. Just google up “tapestry patterns” and you’ll see hundreds of them.
Stitching the Pattern
Stitching the pattern can get confusing if you’re not adept at needlework. You will use a continental stitch, which involves crossing the yarn onto the horizontal and vertical intersection on the tapestry cloth. Since the cloth’s pattern is uniform, a correctly made tapestry stitch must bear a 45-degree angle. Practice creating basic shapes first on another tapestry cloth, before proceeding. Don’t forget to pick good quality yarn, especially if you’re a beginner.
Frame Your Creation
Upon completing your creation, you should have it framed. Select a frame that goes well with the image’s colors. Once framed, hang it on a visible corner of your home. Notice how fine tapestry can make a room look exquisite. You’ll then be aching to stitch up more creations by then.
