If you’ve recorded a video using your phone cam, chances are you may have taken it vertically, which would translate to the video facing the wrong direction when watched on the PC or your TV. Here’s how you can rotate a video back to its correct

Windows XP

Windows XP typically comes with a video editing software called Windows Movie Maker. You  can use this video editing program to rotate your video. Here’s how.

  1. Open Windows Movie Maker and click on File. Choose Import into Collections.
  2. It may take a few seconds to import the video in Windows Movie Maker. Once imported, locate the Timeline and drag and drop the video onto the Timeline.
  3. Go to the Toolbar and click on Video Effects. An easier way to do this is to look for the star on the lower left corner of the Timeline, right-click it and select Video Effects, followed by clicking Rotate 90 or Rotate 270.
  4. Select the Rotate 90 or Rotate 270 option and drag them down to the movie on the Timeline.
  5. Keep on rotating the movie file until it is in the right position.
  6. Look for File on the Toolbar, click it and click on the Save Movie File option. Just keep on saying yes to everything until the movie gets saved.

Windows Movie Maker is considered a very simple media editing tool, but it does have the basics, which is always very helpful.

iMovie

If you’re a Mac user and using iMovie, you should know by now that there is not equivalent Rotate tool that Windows Movie Maker has. Fortunately, that is a solution to that dilemma. Here’s how to rotate a video using iMovie.

  1. Make sure that iMovie that you have installed is iMovie HD or iMovie 6. Otherwise, these tips won’t work.
  2. Download Turn Clip. This isn’t actually a program but an add-on that will complement your iMovie. Open it after downloading and let install.
  3. Open your iMovie.
  4. Open the movie file and drag it to the Timeline.
  5. Look at the Toolbar on top of the Timeline and click Editing.
  6. Click on Video Effects and choose the Turn Clip option.
  7. Choose the Rotation Angle that works best for your video clip, as well as the Media Type. Click OK.
  8. Click on the Apply button once you’re satisfied with the adjustments. The Apply button is found on the lower left side underneath the video itself.
  9. You can edit the movie some more or save it as it is.

While using an iMovie requires an extra step of downloading an add-on, it is also very easy to use and follow.
