How to Replace a Lost US Passport
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 by RJLosing your passport can be stressful, especially if you’re suddenly stranded overseas. Luckily, since many people experience this ordeal everyday, there are now procedures and policies in place, particularly in the US, to you help you snare a new one. Here are some simple steps to help you replace your lost US passport:
Inform the proper agencies.
Before flying overseas, make sure to get all pertinent contact numbers such as the addresses and phone numbers of your local US Consulate or Embassy. Check out the complete list at the US State Department’s website. If and when your US passport gets lost, contact the corresponding numbers as soon as possible so that they can arrange temporary travel documents that will allow your re-entry to the US while your passport is being replaced.
Fill in the necessary documents.
Get two forms from the State Department website if you are currently in the US when you lose your passport. The DS-64 statement form allows you to state that your passport has been lost. You should also get a DS-11 form to request for a replacement passport be sent to you.
Provide all the information necessary and take them to your local Passport Agency. Check with them if they can accommodate your request as soon as possible since most US Post Office locations offer this type of service only on certain days or hours. Check again with the State Department site to get a complete list of accredited passport agencies in your area. You must submit the requested documents in person as stated on the DS-11 form.
If you found your lost passport, mail the original one to the US Department of State Passport Services located at Washington D.C. for it to be canceled. If you would like for it to be returned to you, include that request or it will be destroyed.
Just wait patiently for your new passport to arrive. The processing time varies depending on the backlog of requests.
