The durability and long wear of gel nails are both their blessing and bane. Plus they can leave an awful smell and mess when not removed properly! Here’s how you can remove your gel nails cleanly and quickly without any hassle.

Materials

  • Cotton balls or cotton swabs
  • Nail polish remover
  • Acetone nail polish remover
  • Orange stick or cuticle stick
  • Disposable bowl
  • Nail buffer
  • Emery board
  • Strengthening nail polish

Procedure

  1. First, find a well-ventilated area where you can remove your gel nails in. You’ll be using a lot of nail polish remover, and its smell can be really strong. Do it outdoors or beside an open window in your house.
  2. Remove the nail polish first using a nail polish remover and a cotton ball. Use cotton swabs for the nail’s edges. Doing this step will make a cleaner job out of it, and you won’t have to be dealing with the heavy, melted glob of nail gel and nail polish mixed together later on.
  3. Get your disposable bowl and pour around two inches of nail polish remover in it. Acetone nail polish remover is best for those tough gel nails.
  4. Place your fingers in the bowl, immersing the tips into the acetone nail polish so that the tips are covered. Do this one hand at a time, so that you have a free hand to do the next steps later on.
  5. Check the immersed nail tips after five minutes. They should be a bit gooey and emitting a pungent odor (that’s why you have to be in a well-ventilated area).
  6. Try to lightly tug the ends of the nails to get them off. You can also use an orange stick for this purpose. However, if the gel nails don’t come off easily, don’t force it. Simply immerse it for another two to three minutes and try again.
  7. After the nails have been removed, quickly get a new cotton ball and fresh acetone (not the acetone in the bowl) and apply it on your nails. The result should be slightly rough nail surface.
  8. To smooth the surface of the nails, use a nail buffer.
  9. Repeat Step 4 onwards for your other hand. Reuse the acetone nail polish remover unless it’s too gooey.
  10. Once the gel nails have been removed from both hands, shape your nails using a nail file.
  11. Apply strengthening nail polish to help your nails recover from your gel nail usage.
