How to Read the Bible
Posted byHow to Read the Bible
The Bible means many different things to different people, but it is one of the most influential books ever written. People turn to the Bible as a source of inspiration, and some read it as a way to get in touch with their faith. Some may even study the Bible as an academic text, a historical account, or a literary endeavor. Here are some ways that you can read the Bible for your purposes.
The Bible at a Glance
The Bible is a compilation of books, accounts, and letters that is used as the primary text among Christians, Jews, and other related religions, sects, and denominations. The Bible contains many historical accounts of the history of God’s chosen people, and also contains passages that remind believers of the right way to salvation and grace.
Versions of the Bible
The Bible attracts much conversation and debate not only because of how people and faiths interpret the text, but also the words used to translate the original Greek and Hebrew tracts that the Bible is based on, as well as the Latin Vulgate. The Bible is translated into thousands of languages. Here are some of the common translations and versions available in English:
- Authorized King James Version (KJV)
- American Standard Version (ASV)
- Revised Standard Version (RSV)
- Good News Bible (GNB)
- New English Bible (NEB)
Parts of the Bible
The Bible is divided into three parts, depending on the translation you’re reading:
- The Old Testament is the story of God’s chosen people from Creation to the Babylonian Captivity.
- The New Testament is composed of the life, teachings, and legacy of Jesus.
- The Apocrypha are books of the Bible whose authorship and authenticity are questioned.
Read Cover to Cover
Most people read the Bible as separate books and letters, or refer to specific passages invoked by a priest, pastor, or preacher. If you want to have a deeper appreciation for the Bible, though, you may want to read the book from cover to cover. It will take months or even years for you to completely leaf through and understand the teachings of the Bible, but it is very helpful if you want to renew your commitment and relationship with your faith.
Some religious denominations insist that the writings on the Bible should be taken as they stand, but it may also help for you to read deeper and gain more insights from the text. Many books in the Bible, like the Psalms and the letters sent by Paul, contain many of the teachings and lessons central to Christianity.
Mark Passages
When reading the Bible for reflection or academic study, it’s very important to take down notes of important, moving, and inspirational passages you encounter throughout the text. It’s best to keep a notebook where you can copy passages and write notes, instead of using a highlighter and scribbling notes on the leaves of the Bible itself.
Consult
Many of the passages in the Bible are open to interpretation. There are many ways to understand a passage in the Bible, although people disagree with the meaning of it. When faced with a problematic or difficult passage, don’t hesitate to consult a pastor. He or she may have a scholarly reading and understanding of the text that may give you a new or a better understanding and perception of what the words actually mean.
The Bible is seen by many as the greatest story ever told. It is a source of hope, a guiding light, and a beacon of salvation for people all over the world. With these reminders, you can read the Bible in a whole new way that can bring you back to the faith of a people that began the world’s largest religion.
