An upstart band without proper marketing can fall into dissolution in the long run, given the number of good acts today.  Even if they are composed of great musicians, they can fall into obscurity if not many people are exposed to the band’s songs.  You should tap the online crowd, given the number of people dependent on the internet, in the hope of them liking your music.  Remember, an exceptional band only needs exposure to garner success with its target audience.

Step 1: Register an Account with an Online Music Community

Online music communities are filled with musicians and music aficionados, all of which can spread the word about your band.  Register with a reputable community like Soundclick, MySpace or LastFm.  Create a band profile then showcase a mix of demo and studio versions.  Don’t place all of your best songs, since they will be reserved when for your album, once you get a label or enough cash to produce the album yourself.  Think of the platform as a teaser that leaves listeners wanting more.

Step 2: Communicate

To get noticed, communicate often with the other members of the community.  Engage them in small talk, so they will feel obligated to visit your band profile.  Of course, settling for the community is not enough.  Register an account with a social networking site then post links towards band profile.  Post a trio of songs on your social networking account to get noticed by other members. Never forget to befriend event organizers/outfits, since they will reward you with gigs and more opportunities for exposure.

Step 3: MySpace and Facebook Accounts

Facebook and MySpace are two of the most popular social networking sites, which means millions of people worldwide are registered members.  Register a band profile and individual accounts for each of the band members.  Post information about your band, along with three to five songs, which act as a preview.  Instead of persuading people to listen your music, befriend them.  The more people added to your friends list, the more prospective listeners you gather.

Step 4: Promote your Gigs

Post your gig schedules on the Event application in Facebook or the Bulletin Board feature of Myspace.  Promote your gigs as if they were historical events, so use cool words and catchy catch phrases.  Encourage your friends online to invite other people because the experience is worth it.  In the end, you’ll pack your playing venue, which will earn you torrents of loyal followers.

Step 5: Create a Wikipedia Page

Having a Wikipedia page adds prestige to the reputation of any act.  Register an account with Wikipedia and create your band’s page.  Make it comprehensive.  Write the history, influences, playing style, all of the songs, the story per album and a brief per band member.  You can even create a page for each for the members if you choose.  Link the page to your online community and social networking accounts.  When flocks of strangers begin asking about your band in your online accounts, you know that all of your promotional efforts worked.

All Hyped Up

A successful band is not just about playing exceptional music or having the most groupies.  Much hype is necessary for it to become a commercial success or a cult hit.  It just so happens that the internet is the best place to build that hype.
