How to Prepare for Marriage
Posted byHow to Prepare for Marriage
Planning for an upcoming wedding and a life-long marriage are two different things. While a wedding can take up only a couple of years to prepare, you need more time indeed to prepare for a marriage. Lay a healthy groundwork for your marriage now and reap the long-term benefits tomorrow.
Spend some quality time together and get to know each other. Don’t ever think that love conquers all. Don’t jump into a marriage thinking that you and your partner can deal with any issue easily.
If you meet each other and get married just six months into the relationship, you may be headed for trouble especially if you do not discuss the many things that are integral in a marriage. Here are some of issues that need to be addressed:
Religion
Discussions regarding religion or any other religious belief are important because it is the core of every marriage. Religion is also important especially since there are certain family traditions centered on religion. Do not force anyone into converting religions or beliefs. You cannot change anyone. Accept their beliefs and if it does not fall into yours, it may be wise to just move on.
Family
Discussions and decisions regarding marriage will always be built around the family. You should have a healthy conversation with your spouse regarding the number of children that you want and the kind of lifestyle you wish to live and give them. If one wants a dozen children while the other is okay in having none at all, then that can be a problem.
Finances
Married life is filled with financial decisions that may shape the way you live. Discuss each and every aspect such as financing a home, car, your child’s education, jobs, debt, daily bills, savings and other future purchases and plans. You need to be a solid unit for your finances to be in order.
Another key decision may involve possible investments that can help you save and make more money. Trust and communication is important since there are many risks involved. In the end, you should always think long term when making any investments.
Sex
Consider your partner’s feelings and thoughts about sex. Discussions regarding sex may be intimidating at first but it should be discussed since your level of intimacy, especially in the long run will determine if you will have a successful marriage. Talk things out and discuss your expectations of each other at the onset of the relationship all the way to your married life.
