How to Prepare for Death
Posted on August 26th, 2009 by RJMost of us live as if we’re going to live forever. But the reality is crystal clear — death is a certainty for everyone. Instead of living your life with no direction at all, why not straighten things up by planning ahead? You should prepare for death so you won’t be a burden to all those you will leave behind. And since you only have one shot in this lifetime, it’s time to live life to the fullest. Here are some tips on how you can prepare for death:
Prepare a will.
Together with a lawyer, draft your will to determine where the majority of your properties and possessions will go after you depart to the afterlife. Who will get your house and life savings? Are there any particular items that you own that you would like to give to specific individuals? You can also donate your possessions to different charitable institutions in the event of your death. Copies of your will should be with the executors and should be known to your partner or close friend.
Plan your funeral.
There are many details to look at when planning your funeral. Would you like to be buried or cremated? Would you like a particular church official to officiate in your funeral mass? What type of flowers do you prefer? Write all these details now and allot money for these future funeral expenses.
Organize your documents and finances.
Make sure your financial records and other important documents like life insurance policies, house deeds, bank details are in order. These should be accessible to your loved ones. Your partner or relative should easily locate these to prevent future complications when you are dead.
Finalize your living will.
Put your wishes on paper such as the treatment you’d like to receive or important medical decisions needed. These will help your family members decide what’s best for you. You can also include what organs you’d like to donate.
Live as if there’s no tomorrow.
The best way to prepare for death is to actually live life to the fullest. You get only one chance so make the most out of it. Appreciate the people around you and do not leave arguments or problems unresolved. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you.
Do things you’ve actually wanted to do. Visit an old friend or take a particular course that you’ve always dreaming to sign up for. Meet up with all the people that have touched your life. Do not wait until you are actually on your death bed before you do all these.
