Serving wine at a party is great, spilling wine is not. Knowing how to pour wine may seem like an affectation, but the proper way of pouring wine is guided by sound logic. It will also help not to spill wine so much. Here’s how to pour wine.

  1. Decanting your wine is required if you’re serving one of the older wines or ports. Decanting simply means pouring the wine into a separate container, also known as a decanter. This is done to remove sediments found in older wines which can cause your wine to taste bitter. Decanting is usually done out of view of the guests, but you can use the decanter itself as a decoration for your party.
  2. Make sure that your wine is served at its best. Different wines call for different temperatures when served, along with the appropriate glasses for each type.

  4. Pour a small amount of wine in an extra glass first before serving. This is done to ensure that no small amount of cork gets into other people’s drinks.
  5. Serve the wine to women and older guests first. The men follow and then you are the last one to pour wine into your own glass.
  6. Grip the wine bottle firmly using both hands, one hand on the neck of the bottle and the other one gripping the bottom. Make sure that your hands are clean and dry so you won’t leave any smudge marks.
  7. Pour the wine slowly to avoid it from splashing on your or outside the glass.
  8. Pour still wines aimed for the center of the glass, while sparkling wines should be aimed at the far side of the glass as to discourage the bubbles to come forth. However, should feel uncomfortable about aiming for the far side, it’s perfectly acceptable to pour sparkling wine aimed for the middle of the glass.
  9. Fill up the glass up to 2/3 only, to allow the drinker to swirl the wine and smell the wine bouquet before drinking.
  10. To control drips after pouring the wine, twist the bottle slightly around as you tilt it upright.
  11. Place the wine bottle on a wine bottle coaster to avoid wine stains.
