How to Open RAR Files
Posted on July 15th, 2009 by PaulNot all email sites can send separate files amounting to several MBs. Their servers may not have the capacity to deliver large attachments, with the number of user accounts stored in their database. The problem is, files need to be bundled together for computer programs or website layouts to work. The rar file format comes as the solution. Just compress the files with an archiving software then open them with a program that supports rar files.
Download RAR Archiving Software
For rar files to be opened, you need a program that supports them, specifically rar archiving software. You can download WinRAR or other rar-supported programs. Just Google up the term “rar” or “download rar” and you’ll see hundreds of sites offering various archiving software. Select WinRAR then install it on your computer. The program states that it is only a trial version, but it works fine, plus the trial period doesn’t really expire. In truth, many people with WinRAR have been using the trial version for several years now.
Opening RAR Files
With WinRAR installed on your computer, you can open rar files just by double-clicking them. They will be opened through WinRAR. Downloaded rar files can be opened by the program automatically, prior to saving, since it synchronizes with your browser upon installation. You have the option to save the rar file or to view its contents then select items that you wish to save.
Extract the Contents of RAR Files
If you want to save only portions of a rar file’s contents, view the rar file using WinRAR. Highlight the files you want to save. On the upper part of the WinRAR screen, click Extract. Choose a location where you will save the extracted files then click OK. Once done, check the location you specified to see if the files were indeed saved.
Compressing Files
Aside from opening rar files, you can use your software to compress files and folders into one rar file. Just highlight them, press the right mouse button, then select Add to Archive. WinRAR will open. Type a name for the bundled files. Set the format to zip or rar, depending on your preference.
