How to Open a Beer Bottle
Posted on October 20th, 2009 by ElaineIt’s time for another drinking session, and you’ve invited your friends, got the munchies ready, and cold bottles of beer in the fridge. Before you get started, though, you need to learn how to properly open those bottles.
Using A Bottle Opener
This is the easiest and most straightforward way to open a beer bottle. The pop-top bottle is very commonly seen in many households, and can effectively remove any crown-type cap. It appears like an open mouth, but with the bottom jaw pushed back a bit. Put the lower section’s edge under the teethed edge of the cap, then push the entire item away from where it’s connected, prying the bottle off smoothly.
Bottle openers are very efficient, but what if you don’t have one at hand? Don’t worry, here are several other alternative methods to open a beer bottle.
Using A Fork
- Get the beer bottle, then hold it close to the cap. Grip the bottle tightly, making sure there’s no condensation that will make your hand slip.
- Grip the fork in your right hand, your palm wrapped around its tines. Wedge the handle lengthwise between the cap, and the largest and lowest section of the index finger. If needed, readjust the left hand grip lower or higher on the neck.
- Use your index finger as a fulcrum, then push the fork’s end in your hand downwards, slightly twisting, so its other end engages with the cap. Keep a slow, but steady pressure, until you’re able to pop the cap off. It may fly far, so be careful not to hit other people.
Using Another Beer Bottle
- Get two bottles of beer. Grasp the one you want to open near the bottle cap using your non-dominant hand and put it on a sturdy surface, like a wooden table. Hold the other beer in your other hand.
- Turn the other bottle upside down, the cap in contact under the beer you’re trying to open.
- Using your fingers and palm, grip the two bottles tightly. Keep the two caps together with your index finger, while the middle one acts as a fulcrum.
- Pull down the upside down bottle until the cap pops off.
Using A Lighter
- Hold the lighter in your dominant hand.
- Grip one beer in the other, your hand at the neck slightly, but not touching the cap.
- Put the lighter’s blunt end solidly in between the bottle cap’s edge and your lowest knuckle. Hold the lighter perpendicularly to the bottle.
- Tuck the lighter, so its edge us under the bottle cap’s rim. Squeeze on the bottle tightly, applying little pressure on the lighter, so it’s wedged in between the cap and knuckle.
- Use the lighter as your lever and push down on it, as if you’re wrapping it over your hand and away from the bottle. Use your finger like the middle part of a see-saw.
- The bottle will pop with enough leverage and pressure.
A Few Reminders:
- Drink moderately. Don’t drink and drive! (Tips on how to quit drinking)
- Be careful when using any of the alternative methods. The bottle could slip off your hands, or the fork or lighter could break.
- Make sure the cap doesn’t fly and hit any of your friends.
Opening beer bottles is easy if you know the right methods. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll soon be drinking the night away! If you enjoy reading this article, you’ll surely be interested in learning how to open a bottle without a corkscrew.
