After years of staying in the same house or apartment, it’s finally time for you to move. There are many reasons why people move residence, but moving day is always a bittersweet moment. Yet for all the memories that you’ll leave behind, there’s always that practical question of how to go about moving all your stuff from your old home to your new one. Moving is always a cause for concern for many people, because of the time and effort needed to proceed with moving day without a hitch. Here are some ways to make moving residences easier and more convenient.

Plan the Move

Some people have problems with moving because they do not plan their move correctly. The extra time you take to prepare the move may mean all the difference between a quick and easy move, and a really time-consuming and difficult one. Start off with a list that indicates the following:

  • Things you need to take with you include furniture, appliances, and other stuff that you definitely cannot do without, or is not provided for in your new home.
  • Things you need to leave behind include things that are leased to you by the owner of the house or apartment unit, and things that you don’t really need for the first move. You can come back for these things later when you’ve finally settled everything in your new home.
  • Things you need to give away include tokens and other items that you can give away to neighbors or friends. The items that you give away can lighten up the load for your move, and safe you a lot of time and money in fuel and effort.

Be Neat and Orderly

When you pack everything up, make sure that everything is in order. Label the crates or boxes, and make sure you know where everything is going. It may be helpful to pack up fragile items together with soft items like pillows, bedding, blankets, and clothes. Furniture should be packed up in its own boxes and crates to avoid confusion and damage. It may seem weird or even expensive to pack everything up in its own boxes, but the technique prevents you from losing anything important on moving day.

Hire a Moving Company

Chances are that even your big sports-utility vehicle only has room for two big crates, a roll of bedding, and an easy chair. An SUV or a pickup truck may be big and powerful, but it may not have the size or power to carry all the stuff you need to make your move to your new home. Often, you need something far more powerful.

Moving companies have specially designed trucks that can carry the contents of an entire home without a hitch. House movers also help you retrieve your packed items and deliver them to your new home as part of the service. The services of a good moving company do not come cheap, but there are ways that you can reduce the expenses that come with moving:

  • Hook up a trailer. You can attach a trailer or moving wagon to the back of your daily driving car to store smaller items. The big items can then be loaded up inside the moving truck.
  • Borrow a mobile home. An empty mobile home can also be used in place of a moving van, as long as it is big and empty. Mobile homes can be self-powered, which means that they can be driven to your new residence in a snap.
  • Prepare a convoy. If you cannot afford the costs of a moving service, you may want to enlist the help of your family, friends, and close neighbors to help you make the move. You may leave them with gifts of appreciation, or an invitation for dinner at your new home.

Clean Up

The place you’ve been living in for years should be left the way it was when you first moved in. Cleaning up after your old home is the best gesture of respect and courtesy to the owners, and the new tenants. The place doesn’t have to look like the original, but it has to look good. Take the time to spruce up the place by doing some repair jobs on the plumbing, repainting old and cracked walls, or even planting new flowers in the garden to show everyone how much you care and how much you appreciated your stay.

Moving day can be emotional, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as some people make it seem. With these tips to make moving easy, you can focus on the real emotions that play during the move, and not the real problems that come with making a difficult transition between one home and another.
