How to Make Turkey Stuffing
Posted on January 1st, 2009 by monsterguideA roast turkey always evokes memories of family gatherings at Thanksgiving, Christmas or just because. You can’t mistake the fantastic aroma of a turkey roasting in the oven.
Turkey stuffing is very much an individual preference. Some people like just plain bread and spices, others put sausage or dried fruit. Here is a basic recipe that can be added to based on your personal preference. You can definitely adjust the amount of each spice and herb too, based on your taste.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 1/2 cups chopped onions
- 2 cups chopped celery
- 4 teaspoons dried sage
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon dried savory
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon marjoram
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 14 cups dried white bread, cubed
Variations
For variation, add 1 to 2 cups of chopped fruit to the mix. Chopped apples, chopped dried apricots, raisins, currants or blueberries are all amazing added to herbed turkey stuffing.
Step 1: Cook the Vegetables
Melt the butter, and add the vegetables. Cook for a few minutes until the onion and celery are getting tender. Add the spices and herbs, and cook for a few more minutes.
Step 2: Mix
Transfer to a large bowl and mix thoroughly with the bread cubes until all bread is coated with the vegetable/herb mixture.
Step 3: Store or Stuff
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours, or stuff the turkey and roast immediately. You cannot stuff the bird and then let it sit – this encourages the growth of bacteria that could me you quite sick.
To stuff the turkey, place the stuffing in the front and rear cavities of the turkey until they are full but not overstuffed. If there is insufficient skin to stretch around the stuffing opening, use a bread crust and secure with skewers or specially designed turkey clips.
