How to Make Fried Ice Cream
Posted on March 23rd, 2009 by ElaineThey say ice cream is best enjoyed cold, but do you know that you can enjoy it as a warm, crunchy and deep-fried treat? Fried ice cream is a dessert you’ll find in many Thai restaurants, but you can enjoy this treat in the comfort of your home, too. Here’s how to make fried ice cream.
What You’ll Need:
- Ice cream
- Two to three eggs
- Crushed corn flakes, cookie crumbs, frosted flakes, or graham cracker or a loaf of white bread for the coating
- Canola oil
- Sugar and cinnamon (optional)
- Deep pan
- Freezer
- Wire spoon or tongs
- Paper towels or napkins
- Cookie sheet
- Wax paper
- Ice cream scooper
Procedure:
- Using your ice cream scooper, scoop your ice cream, at least seven to ten scoops. Form them into roundish balls, each with a diameter of three to four inches. Put the scoops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, at least an inch apart.
- You will need to harden the ice cream scoops. Put the cookie sheet into the freezer, leaving them for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Get the eggs, and crack them in a bowl to make the egg wash. You can either separate the yolk, and just use the whites, or you can use them both. Beat the eggs as smoothly as you can.
- Get a dish and put your the crumbs or flakes for coating in it.This will make coating the ice cream scoops easier.
- Put the deep-frying pan over the stove, and fill the bottom with Canola oil, at least three inches from the bottom. Let the oil heat up to 375 degrees.
- Take out your ice cream scoops from the fridge. Get one, and very carefully roll it in the egg wash, then on the plate with the crumbs or flakes, for the outer layer. If you’re using flakes, make sure the scoop is completely covered. If it’s white bread, rip off some strips, then use them to cover the scoop. Repeat for the remaining ice cream balls. This can be quite messy, and you have to do this quickly, or the balls will melt.
- When you’ve covered all the balls, it’s time to put them in the hot oil. Test first if the oil is hot enough by getting a ball, and touching one small side of it into the oil. If the oil sizzles, you can proceed.
- Deep fry the ice cream balls into the oil for five to eight seconds, or until they’re lightly browned. Using the tongs or wire spoon, take them out and put into a plate lined with paper towel Let them cool, and allow the napkin to soak up excess Canola oil
- Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the balls, then serve.
A Few Tips
- Be careful when deep frying the ice cream balls. Make sure you put them into the pan carefully, so the hot oil won’t splash and burn you.
- Top your ice cream balls with whipped cream and drizzle chocolate fudge over it.
- Fried ice cream can replace the usual ice cream you serve in a banana split.
