Just like the cheerleaders themselves, the equipment and props used for cheerleading must be eye-pleasing and fun. One very common prop used is the pom-pom, and even though you can order these from a manufacturer, you can save some of the costs and create your own.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pom-pom strips material (You can use trash bags, curling ribbon, newspaper, or art paper)
  • Colored duct or electrical tape
  • Scissors
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Rubber bands

Procedure:

  1. Know your team/squad color. You’ll need this when you buy the strip material for the pom-pom. You can combine two or more colors, depending on your preference. If you’re using trash bags, for example, black and white is a good combination, for a modern look.

  3. Cut the material into a bunch of strips of equal lengths. They don’t have to be exactly of the same length-just near enough so no strand will stand out too much. For trash bags, cut them in half first, then lay the halves on a flat surface one on top of the other and cut them into strips, trimming away uneven parts. The thickness of the strips must also be equal. If you want fuller looking pom-poms, settle for thin strips, while thicker strips make thinner pom-poms.
  4. Once you have enough strips that can make a pair of pompoms, separate them into two piles. Combine all the strips in one pile, equally aligning one of the ends. Wrap your fist around the aligned edge, measuring how much space you’ll have to allot for the handle. Mark it off by securing it with a rubber band. Do the same for the other pile.
  5. Insert a Popsicle stick in a portion of the pom-pom with the rubber band. This will make the handle sturdier and easy to grasp.
  6. Secure the handle by wrapping colored duct tape or electrical tape around the strips and the Popsicle stick. Do the same for the other pom-pom. You now have a pair of cheerleading pom-poms you can wave around!

Whether you’re on stage performing a pyramid or just whooping on the bleachers, having a good pair of cheerleader pom-poms to wave around is great. Just remember these steps and you’ll be able to make these fun props yourself.
