How to Make a Voodoo Doll

Witches and natives are said to use voodoo dolls for magic and to play tricks or harm the people they represent. This is partly true, but the fact is you can make a spooky but unique voodoo doll just for fun. It doesn’t require any spells or incantations, you just need the right materials.

What You’ll Need:

  • Two sturdy sticks
  • Yarn at least two to three feet long in the color that complements or contrasts the fabric
  • Spanish moss
  • Two-inch scrap fabric
  • String
  • Beads for eyes
  • Needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Waxed thread or hemp cord
  • Glue
  • Other decorations

Procedure:

  1. Make the doll’s body frame using the two twigs or sticks. Put them in a “cross” shape, then wrap the string around the juncture to hold the sticks together.
  2. Get the Spanish moss (if you don’t have any, just use plain doll stuffing), then wrap it around the doll’s body, starting in the middle and then working your way up, going around the arms and the head, then back to the other side. As much as possible, use just one piece of stuffing material. Wrap the stuffing as tightly as you can, so it’ll stick. If it doesn’t secure it with a string.
  3. Get the fabric strips and wind them carefully around the doll. Leave a small bit of the moss or the batting sticking out from the sticks’ end and the head. To attach the ends, use a small amount of glue, or sew with the needle or thread.
  4. Make a face for the voodoo doll. You can use peas, seeds, buttons, beads. Make a nose, eyes and mouth. You can either sew these on or glue them. Make sure they’re securely attached.
  5. Decorate the doll further, as you want to. You can use various kinds of leather, fabric, hair and natural materials. Make a small pouch bag, or attach some hair decorations.
  6. Dress up the doll in a simple tunic. Cut a rectangular fabric that will fit it, cut a hole in the middle, then slip it over. Use some spare ribbon or string to make a belt. If you have a particular person in mind whom the doll is fashioned after, use familiar items that symbolize that person.
  7. Add colored pins to channel in positive things and blessings. Here are the pin colors with their corresponding symbolism.
    • White - positive
    • Yellow- success
    • Red - power
    • Blue - love
    • Green - Money
    • Purple - spirituality
    • Black - repel negative energy
    • Light blue - family

Voodoo dolls are creepy, but cute. Use these steps to make your own, but a reminder: use these dolls only for good. Karma can strike you ten times worse when you try to use voodoo dolls to harm others.
