How to Make a Sock Puppet
Posted on June 9th, 2009 by CarmeliaWith today’s expensive and complicated toys, it’s so easy to forget the fun that can come from a simple sock puppet. Bring out you and your child’s creative side, bonding all the while, by creating a new member of the family from a sock. Here’s how.
Materials
- Clean sock
- Marker
- Craft glue or warm glue from glue gun
- Needle
- Thread
- Toilet paper cardboard core
- Long wooden stick
- Small plastic container
For Different Features
- Eyes: Buttons, loose doll eyes, beads, markers
- Nose: Buttons, beads, styrofoam balls, packing peanuts, small Christmas balls, pom-pom balls.
- Ears: Packing peanuts, baby socks
- Mouth: Marker, colored thread, yarn
- Teeth: Felt triangles, packing peanuts
- Tongue: Red felt
- Hair and facial hair: Stuffing, thread, yarn, pipe cleaners, styrofoam balls
- Snout: Styrofoam cups
- Horns: Packing peanuts, rolled yarn, rolled paper
- Accessories: Strung beads for necklaces, paper cups as hats, scrap material for shirts and ties
Procedure
- Use a clean sock that has lost its partner. Worn out socks or damaged ones should do as well. The sock should fit in the child’s hand, or yours.
- Use a marker to lightly mark where the eyes, nose, ears and other facial features should be. Do this with your child to make the sock puppet even more personalized.
- Take off the sock and with your child, assemble what materials you would want for the sock puppet’s unique features. This well help putting on the sock puppet’s facial features much easier later on.
- Put the sock on a tall tissue cardboard core. If you’re using glue, this is the best way for you to prevent the other side of the sock from sticking too. You can skip this step if you intend to sew all the facial features on.
- Use craft glue to put on each feature. If a craft glue is not available, you can use a glue gun. Don’t apply the glue from the glue gun directly to the sock. Instead, put it in a small plastic container first, let it cool a little, and apply the glue to the material using a long thin stick.
- Stick each feature on the marked area.
- Some materials like buttons and beads will be attached better using a needle and thread. Only an adult should sew them, not children.
- If you used glue, let the sock puppet sit overnight to ensure that the glue has set and hardened.
- Once the basic face is done, you can now put accessories! Make necklaces, hair clips, clothes, glitter neckties, hats, anything you want!
