How to Make a Long Distance Relationship Work
Posted on July 5th, 2009 by MarckLove always happens at the right time, but for some people, it never settles in the right place. Your partner may need to move somewhere far away, but you want to sustain the relationship and make it work, no matter how difficult it is. Here are some ways to make a long distance relationship work.
Set Your Commitment
Many couples would rather break up a relationship than settle for the painful realities of love hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away. Long distance relationships can test the bounds, limits, and strength of your relationship even more than having regular intimate contact.
Before engaging in a long distance relationship, you should ask yourself if you’re prepared to handle the kind of commitment needed to get it going. Many people believe that a long distance relationship is one of the best signs that it’s better to let go of the relationship, so be prepared for the worst if you expect to have a long-term relationship with your partner over a long distance.
Maintain Contact
Just because you’re in a long distance relationship doesn’t mean that you should give up on reaching out to each other. Communication is an important part of any relationship, and it becomes all the more valuable to couples who are far apart:
- Chat, e-mail, send letters. Thanks to modern technology, you can now bring yourselves closer to each other by using e-mail or instant messaging services to talk to each other. If you want the relationship to be even more romantic, you can send actual letters, greeting cards, or postcards to each other via snail mail. Regular phone calls can also help sustain the relationship.
- Pay a visit. You should not limit yourself to phone calls, instant messages, and e-mails. Whenever you can, try to visit your partner wherever he or she may be. It’s not a matter of proving your commitment, but you genuinely care enough for your partner to spend time with each other.
Trust Your Partner
It’s not the distance involved in a long distance relationship that causes a break-up. If you don’t trust your partner to be faithful to you even if you’re far away from each other, you may want to consider letting the relationship go. Trust and faith in your partner can help you sustain the relationship even if you do not see each other open. Remember to keep communication open, and put your full trust in your partner that he or she will stay faithful to you. At the same time, you should reciprocate this trust by staying faithful to your partner.
Long distance relationships can be very challenging for both parties. With these tips, you can sustain a romance with the one you love, even if you are so close but still so far.
