How to Make a Doll Cake

If your little girl loves princesses and dolls, she will surely be delighted with a doll cake for her birthday.

What is a doll cake? A doll cake is a cake that incorporates a doll into its design. The cake is usually made to look like a long, full-skirted ballgown that the doll wears. The effect is almost always charming and when done right, delicious too. You can even make it using cake mix or by baking Yellow Cake. Here’s how to make a doll cake.

Yellow Cake

Bake three batches’ worth of yellow cake. Two of the batches should be baked in the tube shape while one should be baked in a bowl shape.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, with extra for dusting
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Procedure

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Butter the insides of a ten-inch tube pan. Dust the bottom and sides with flour, tapping out any excess.
  3. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  4. Attach a paddle attachment to your mixer and beat the butter until softened in medium low speed, around one to two minutes. Gradually add sugar as you beat, scraping down the sides occassionally. Keep beating until mixture and light and fluffy, around four minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Stop beating when all are well incorporated
  5. Mix the buttermilk and vanilla
  6. Slowly add the sifted flour in the batter, alternating with the buttermilk and vanilla. Do this in three additions, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat until the batter is just incorporated.
  7. Pour the batter in the prepared tube pan. Let bake for around 40 minutes, or until cake tester inserted in the middle of the cake and it comes out clean.
  8. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 15 minutes before removing from pan. Let it cool completely on a wire rack before adding frosting.

Assembling the Cake

Tools and ingredients

  • Yellow cake
  • Commercial pink frosting
  • Frosting tools
  • 1 inch cookie cutter
  • Bread knife
  • Turntable cake stand

Procedure

  1. Trim off the top of the two tube cakes to make them level. Trim the bowl cake too, taking off 1/3 off the top. Set aside.
  2. Use a deep cookie cutter to cut off a hole in the center of the two tube cakes and the two pieces of the bowl cake.
  3. Put a cake platter on the turntable cake stand.
  4. Put one of the tube cakes on the turntable, the trimmed part up.
  5. Spread a layer of frosting on each layer. Put the second tube cake on top, followed by one half of the bowl cake. The topmost part should be the rounded part of the bowl cake, forming a bell-like formation of cakes overall.
  6. Apply frosting all over the cakes to make them look one unified whole. Even out the frosting by using a clean piece of paper and shaving off the excess.
  7. Use a small knife to make small swirls on the frosting, creating a design on the skirt.
  8. Take the Barbie doll, remove its clothes and cover its body and hair with plastic wrap. Insert in the hole in the cake.
  9. Pipe frosting in the gap between the Barbie and the cake.
  10. Pipe decorative frosting to form the Barbie’s top. Remove the plastic wrap from the Barbie’s hair.
  11. Do not light candles on this cake as your Barbie’s hair may catch fire.
  12. That’s it! You’re done.
