How to Make a Banner with Flash
Posted on June 23rd, 2009 by monsterguideFlash is a popular way to create and generate dynamic content on the Web. All sorts of page elements can be made with Flash, like ad or title banners for websites. If you know the essentials of Flash and you wish to design your own Flash banner, here are some ways to help you make one.
Tools
Here are the tools you need to create a Flash banner for your website:
- Flash designer. Macromedia Flash MX is one of many standard applications used to make Flash objects and applications, although you can also use other Flash developing and programming software.
- Sketch. All good designs start with a sketch, and even the best Flash developers and designers start their Flash projects with a rough draft on pencil and paper. Sketch the project first, and set some tentative timelines before working on a Flash banner.
Design
A good Flash banner starts with a good design. Here are some design elements that you can include in your Flash project:
- Size. Most ad banners are small images with a 468 px by 60 px stage size. You may make larger banners, but most advertisements use this size as a standard.
- Sound. You can add sound to Flash content, but you should make sure that it does not distract the user from content. It may help to add a mute function, or eliminate sound altogether for faster-loading animation.
Motion
The basic elements of Flash animation can be drawn using the tools on the left-side pane of Flash MX, or importing images into the program. There are two types of motion in Flash that you can use for banner ads:
Motion Tweening
Motion tweening is a Flash effect where a shape or a group of shapes move along a stage. Rotating images, or images moving along the banner ad, can be achieved through motion tweening. To use motion tweening, follow these steps:
- Convert the shape or object into a graphic by right-clicking the object, and click the “Convert to Symbol” option.
- Set the keyframes on the Flash timeline. You will only use one set of keyframes.
- Click anywhere on the timeline, and go to the “Properties” tab in the middle of the Flash stage.
- Select “Motion Tween.”
- Set the properties of the tween.
- As soon as the properties are set, test the project by pressing Ctrl + Enter.
Shape Tweening
Shape tweening is a Flash effect where a shape or object is “morphed” into another object over a number of frames on the stage. Shape tweening is useful to make other objects disappear from the stage, or to change a shape into another shape. To create a simple shape tweening effect, follow these steps:
- Create two or more shapes on the stage. You may set the objects apart to make one object disappear, or overlap the objects to set a morph.
- Convert the shapes or objects into a graphic by right-clicking the object, and click the “Convert to Symbol” option.
- Set the frames on the Flash timeline. You need three sets of keyframes: one to mark the beginning, one to mark the end, and one to mark the center frame.
- Click anywhere on the timeline, and go to the “Properties” tab in the middle of the Flash stage.
- Select “Shape Tween.”
- Set the properties of the tween, depending on what shape will disappear or morph.
- Test the project by pressing Ctrl + Enter.
