How to Listen to Your iPod in the Car
Posted on February 17th, 2009 by MarckThanks to digital MP3 players like the iPod, the age of CD players and eight-track cassette tapes have now gone the way of the dinosaurs. Many new cars now come with a complete integration of the iPod with the stereo system, but you need to make some small, user-friendly modifications for your iPod if you want the gadget to work with your existing stereo system:
Tools
To make your iPod work with your car stereo system, you need the following tools:
- iPod of any variety (iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, or iPod Mini)
- In-out speaker jack (if you’re using an iPod Shuffle)
- Linking kit (if your iPod has a 30-pin connector)
- Car stereo system
Steps
- Sync your iPod with your iTunes library and fill it up with good driving music.
- If you own an iPod Shuffle, you simply need to connect an in-out speaker jack to the car stereo system and the iPod Shuffle. Connect one end of the jack cable to the iPod, and connect the other end of the jack to the “In” slot of the stereo system.
- If you own an iPod Classic, iPod Nano, or iPod Mini, you need to use a link kit. Follow the instructions on the package to install the kit. A simple kit will typically involve attaching the iPod’s pin jacks to the iPod, and inserting the other end of the cable to the “audio in” jack slot on the car stereo.
Tips
- The amplifier and speaker system of your car has a broader range of sound compared to earphones, so you need to sync iTunes with high-bitrate audio files.
- Secure your iPod to a stable yet accessible position, like the center console.
- Do not turn on the volume of the stereo too loud for you to not hear sounds from the road, like horns and emergency sirens.
With these steps and tips to help you listen to your iPod in your car, you no longer have to wear earphones while driving. Linking your iPod with your in-car stereo system makes driving safer, easier, and more enjoyable.
