How to Kill Ants
Posted on May 25th, 2009 by CarmeliaAnts may be small, but in greater numbers, can be a serious problem. Ants just don’t bite, but they can also transmit diseases, get to your food, and cause many inconveniences. Here are the different ways to kill and get rid of ants. A combination of the different methods will ensure a more effective solution.
Kill the Queen
Trace the Queen ant by locating its nest within your house. Killing the Queen ant will put an end to the colony in your house. Get rid of the nest while you’re at it by pouring boiling water directly on the nest.
Clean Your House
Oftentimes, ants come in your house and decide to stay when there are lots of food to inspire them to do so. Cleaning your house regularly will lessen the chances of leaving tiny bits of food around that ants can feed upon. These should include the following chores:
- Wiping down tabletops and other surfaces with mild bleach or vinegar solution.
- Regular sweeping, mopping and vacuuming.
- Keeping food in air-tight containers.
- Keeping the sink clean, washing dishes as soon as eating is done.
- Put pet food on a wide, shallow water basin filled with an inch of water to discourage ants getting to it.
Clear the Trail
When you see a clear trail of ants, there are several ways to get rid of said trail altogether:
- Spray the trail using a mild bleach solution, wiping up with a wet paper towel afterward.
- Vacuum the trail and the ants. Follow this up by vacuuming talcum powder to kill the ants inside the dustbin
Block the Entrances
Ants have crafty ways of getting into your home, and one of them is getting through the small nooks and crannies of your house. Make a thorough inspection of your home and block these ant entrances. Ant trails are usually a great way to locate where the trail originates from. Cover cracks in windows, doors and floors with caulk. You can also use talk, salt and diatomaceaous earth. Diatomaceaous earth, however, is unsafe for pets.
Poison the Ants
If you don’t have pets or children in your household, you can try poisoning the ants. You can use commercial ant poison or make your own using borax and honey.
To make a homemade ant poison, mix a cup of water, two cups sugar and two tablespoons of boric acid. If you do not have pets or children, you can leave little dollops of this mixture where ants are usually found. You can also use a combination of borax and peanut butter for this purpose.
If you do have children or pets, put the poison in a jar. Seal the jar tightly, and poke holes through it for the ants to get in. Once you’ve gotten rid of them all, get rid of the poisoned bait.
