How to Install New Fonts
Posted on March 5th, 2009 by PaulHaving a good selection of fonts gives you a handful of choices for boosting the aesthetics of your text documents. The problem is, a computer’s selection is rather limited. You must install new sets, coming from either the internet or purchased software, if you want more choices for fonts. Don’t worry, it’s easy. You just have to access Control Panel and locate the Fonts folder.
Adding New Fonts
The internet contains hundreds of sites that offer free sets of fonts. You can search for them using a reputable search engine and install the font files. However, some of the files may contain viruses and malware, so you should scan your computer right after downloading.
Procedure:
- Open a web browser then proceed to a search engine, preferably Google or Yahoo!
- Key in “free fonts” then press Enter.
- Click on the first few results and download the free fonts. Store them, for now, in My Documents or the desktop, so they can be easily located.
- Once the fonts have downloaded, click Start then Control Panel.
- Double click on Fonts, which opens a new window.
- On the top portion of the Fonts window, click File then Install New Font.
- Proceed to the Drives column. Select the drive that contains the fonts you downloaded.
- Once done, go to the Folders column and zero-in on your newly downloaded fonts. For multiple fonts, hold CTRL, as you click on each font. Click OK after selecting all the fonts you want to install.
- Place a mark in the box beside Copy fonts to the Fonts Folder.
- Click OK.
- Open a new word or text document and see if the new fonts appear.

When installing fonts from a CD, the task is a bit simpler. You just have to select the CD drive containing the fonts CD and mark your desired text styles in the Install New Fonts window. Follow the remainder of the procedure to install the fonts.
The Internet is Your Reliable Font Resource
Now that you have a truckload of new text styles, you can make your word documents as dainty as your journal. Just go back to the internet if ever you need to grab more.
