How to Install Laptop Memory
Posted on July 15th, 2009 by PaulWhen a laptop computer is running low on disk space, the first thing that a person does is erase files that are deemed unnecessary. However, when you start to run out of files to delete, the logical thing to do is to add more RAM or memory to your laptop. Installing memory seems like a hard task, at first, since you have to handle the computer’s internal parts. In truth, you just have to hook it up to the memory slot then close the casing.
Check the Laptop’s Capacity
Before installing RAM in your laptop, better check its capacity first. Adding too much RAM will render the extra space useless. To check, click Start then Control Panel. On the Control Panel screen, double-click System. Click the General tab. A list displaying all of the installed devices will appear, including the memory. Read the laptop’s manual to know if all the memory slots are occupied as well as the type of RAM that should be installed.
Installing RAM
After purchasing RAM from a computer store, the task is to insert it in the designated slot, which is found inside the laptop. You need a screwdriver and a pair of careful hands to install it successfully.
Procedure:
- Switch off your laptop then turn it over.
- Open the battery compartment.
- Remove the battery.
- Remove all of the screws that are holding the memory storage’s cover shut.
- Locate a free slot then insert the RAM. Make sure it is securely held by the slot.
- Once done, return the cover of the memory storage, the battery, and the battery compartment’s cover.
- Turn on your laptop. Wait for it to boot.
- If the laptop beeps, you need to refit the RAM into the slot (see steps 1 - 6).
- When laptop memory is installed, go to Control Panel -> System -> General tab.
- The memory you just installed should be found on the list of devices.
Upon installing RAM, you can store more files and programs in your laptop. You can even install cool games, depending on your computer’s free space. However, when your laptop runs out of memory and all the slots are taken, you can hook up an external hard drive then store some of the files there.
