Many computer enthusiasts prefer to build their own computer to get the performance of the machine just the way they want it. Building a customized computer, however, takes a lot of steps that should make sure that every component of the machine works at optimum levels. Here are some tools and steps you need to install a computer processor, and get yourself started building your own computer.

Tools

The kind of processor your computer is configured for is indicated on the user’s manual of the motherboard. Once you have the information for what processor is compatible or recommended for your computer, you need to get your hands on these tools:

    processor

  • Processor kit. The kit or package includes the processor, the heat sink, and other supplies needed to install the processor on the motherboard.
  • Thermal Compound. Thermal paste helps to transfer heat generated by the processor to the heat sink.
  • Screwdriver. Make sure to use the right-sized screwdriver to avoid damage to the motherboard, either due to force or because the tool slips along screws.
  • Anti-static working surface. The circuitry and the electrical components of the computer can be wrecked if you expose it to high amounts of static electricity. It’s best to use an anti-static mat when working on your computer hardware.

Steps

  1. Locate the CPU socket.
  2. A small lever on the side of the socket disengages the lock. Lift the lever to open the socket.
  3. Align the CPU into the socket, and carefully lower the unit back into the motherboard.
  4. Lock the processor into the socket by pressing the lever back in place. Make sure not to exert too much pressure on the motherboard to avoid damage.
  5. Apply a small amount of thermal grease on the exposed area of the CPU.
  6. Align the heat sink unit on top of the processor, making sure that the points and contacts are aligned properly with the socket.
  7. Once the heat sink is attached and mounted on the processor, make sure to attach the CPU fan and fan header properly.

Installing a new computer processor may seem difficult, but with the right tools and steps, you’re off to a good start in building your own personal computer.
