How to Improve Your Eyesight
Posted on June 10th, 2009 by MarckWhile there’s nothing you could do about eyesight problems that require corrective glasses or surgery, you can still have eye problems even if you have 20/20 vision. Eyestrain and fatigue may lead to eyesight problems in the long run. Here are some ways to help you improve your eyesight and maintain perfect vision.
Exercise Your Eyes
The eyes have many muscles that allow them to move and see in different directions. Eyestrain may be caused by activities that cause eye fatigue, like the excessive use of computers or watching hours of television. To avoid eyestrain, you need to exercise your eyes the same way you do your body:
- Movement. Stare at a blank wall, and imagine a square or a rectangle. “Trace” some lines along that imagined shape: move your eyes along the sides, and use zig-zag motions to move along opposite sides of the rectangle. Do this without moving your head.
- Focus. Put your fingers and thumb together, and open your hand like a flower bud. Keep your focus on one finger at a time as you slowly open and close your hand.
- Rest. After performing each exercise, allow your eyes to rest for about a minute or so. Repeat the exercises again as needed.
It’s also important to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. A pair of shades or sunglasses can help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of harsh sunlight.
Food for the Eyes
Your diet can also affect the health of your eyes. Two nutrients - lutein and zeaxanthin - are helpful to keep your eyes healthy. Retinol, or vitamin A, is also essential for good eye health. Here are other foods that you should eat to keep your eyes healthy:
- Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, whether raw or cooked.
- Many people claim that garlic is a proven food that prevents the onset of cataract and other eye diseases.
- Wheat sprouts are not only good for salads and other healthful foods, but also contain enzymes that help break down complex nutrients in food to give you the recommended dose of vitamin A.
- Spinach, like all dark green and leafy vegetables, is a great source of lutein and zeaxanthin. It’s best to cook spinach lightly to preserve its healthful nutrients.
The best way to care for your eyes is to see a doctor regularly, so that he or she can check the condition of your eyes. With these tips, you can see the world in a better light all the time.
