The hula hoop is a popular toy that’s been around for quite a while. Ancient Greeks are said to have enjoyed playing with the hula hoop back in the day. Nowadays, the hula hoop isn’t just a great toy, it’s also used as an art form and even to promote weight loss. Intrigued? Grab hold of one of those hula hoops and get started!

  1. Grasp the hula hoop firmly in both hands and lower it to ankle level. Step into the hula hoop with both feet.
  2. Bring up the hula hoop just a little bit below your waist.
  3. Pull the hula hoop slightly forward until one part of it is resting slightly against your back.

  5. Twist your body counterclockwise, bringing the hula hoop as far as you can go.
  6. Fling the hula hoop clockwise so that the inner edge rolls in a level circle around your torso. For the first few seconds, the hula hoop will circle you on relying only on the strength of your throw.
  7. Once you get the hang of how the hula hoop works, put it aside to practice how to move.
  8. Put your feet firmly on the ground, feet shoulder width apart. Put your hands on your hips and circle your pelvis around, from the left to the back to your right and forward. Remove your hands from your hips as soon as you get a more familiar feel to it.
  9. Once you’re more confident of how your hips should rotate, try it again with the hula hoop this time. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not successful on your second, third or even fourth try. Each person has an individual way of maintaining the hula hoop looping around your body.
  10. If you’re still having a difficult time maintaining the hula hoop to circle around you, bend your knees very slightly. This will help lower your center of gravity and make circling your hips easier.
  11. Try to make the hula hoop go faster to maintain its circling around you.
