No matter how many cells a laptop battery has, the amount of power charged into it at any given time is still limited.  Laptop users put a high premium on energy savings, and Microsoft Windows offers many ways to optimize power consumption for notebook computers.  Here’s how you can enable hibernation in laptops operating on Microsoft Windows XP.

What is Hibernation?

Some people use the “Standby” or “Shut Down” functions with laptops, which can be quite inconvenient if you plan to use your laptop for a conference or a long meeting.  Most people need to have the same windows and applications activated when they boot up the computer.  The Hibernate function provides the easiest and most convenient way to preserve power in the laptop while keeping your programs active, if you’re not going to use your computer for a short period of time.

Enabling Hibernation

To enable and configure the Hibernate function, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start menu and activate the Control Panel.
  2. Click on the “Performance and Maintenance” menu.
  3. Select “Power Options.”
  4. If your computer hardware supports hibernation, there should be a “Hibernate” tab on the interface.
  5. Click on the “Hibernate” tab and enable hibernation.  Make sure that you have enough disk space to activate hibernation.
  6. Save all changes.

Hibernating a Computer

To activate the Hibernate function, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Start menu and click “Shut Down.”  You may also quickly access the “Shut Down” function by pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete buttons at the same time.
  2. Press and hold the Shift key until the “Standby” button (colored yellow) changes to “Hibernate.”
  3. Click the “Hibernate” button.

Depending on the model of your laptop, you may also configure certain keys to activate the “Hibernate” function, using power management tools that came with the device driver CD.  For most users, the “Hibernate” function should be enabled when you close the lid of the laptop while the computer is still on.
