A henna tattoo is a popular fixture for most parties and events. Why? Henna tattoos are a great and fun way to get tattoos without pain or permanence. You can enjoy a henna tattoo for a few days without worrying that your parents will flip out about it. It’s a good business idea, and can earn you a few bucks in the next party. Here’s how to henna tattoo.

Materials

  • Henna pens made from 100% natural ingredients
  • Henna essential oil
  • Design pattern
  • Toothpicks or an orange stick
  • Mixture of equal parts lemon juice, sugar and water
  • Soap and water
  • Stencil (optional, for complicated henna tattoo patterns only)

Procedure

  1. Use henna pens to make application of the henna easier, with varied pen tips allowing different flows. Otherwise, you can use plastic bags with the corner cut (think of icing bags) to apply the henna.

  3. If you’re making your own henna paste, make it according to instructions. If there are no instructions, mix two tablespoons of dry henna with enough water or tea to make a toothpaste-like consistency. Add a few drops of clove oil if you want to make the color darker.
  4. Avoid using black henna as it has a chemical component that causes skin irritation.
  5. Draw a pattern where you wish to apply the henna. Use simple patterns if you’re a beginner. Use a stencil pattern for complicated henna tattoo patterns.
  6. Clean your hands thoroughly using warm water soap. You can also clean your hands using cotton balls with astringent. Body oils can ruin a good henna tattoo.
  7. Apply the henna all along the pattern lines. Think of it as applying icing on a cake. The henna must come out in small tubular forms all applied evenly. Flat henna lines will not last as long.
  8. If you make a mistake, use a toothpick, an orange stick, or cotton swabs to correct it.
  9. Once you’re done, let the henna dry for five hours. Do not let it get wet and do not let anyone touch it. You can use a hairdryer to make the color more vivid.
  10. Remove the dried henna after five hours. Apply olive oil all over the henna tattoo as soon as you’ve done so.
  11. To make the henna last longer, make a solution made from equal parts of sugar and lemon juice. Dab a cotton swab into the solution and dab the henna tattoo with it. Wait for it to dry and apply another layer of the same solution.
  12. Avoid washing the area with water for the next eight to 14 hours to make sure the henna lasts.
