How to Have a Great Single Valentine’s Day
Posted on January 1st, 2009 by monsterguideIt’s not like you’re begrudging couples of the right to have their own day in the calendar, but their romantic ways come February 14 are just irritating. Not only do you have to put up with couples who hold hands while walking and exchange kisses and embraces under a Valentine’s sunset, but you also have to be reminded of your lot on this day. Yes, you’re alone on Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean the day is not yours to celebrate. Instead of brooding over having no one to spend Valentine’s Day with, you can treat it as a special holiday for your own kind: Singles Awareness Day.
What is Singles Awareness Day?
Singles Awareness Day is an alternative way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. There are many reasons why Singles Awareness Day is celebrated:
- Having no Valentine. The acronym “SAD” may stand for sadness. A person may celebrated Valentine’s Day with his or her significant other in the past, but the relationship may have ended on a sour note. Singles Awareness Day then reminds them of the times they shared with their exes, and plunges them into despair and grief.
- Protesting commercialization. Valentine’s Day is seen by many people as an opportunity for businesses to profit from true love. Singles Awareness Day is a way to protest materialistic ideas about romance, as well as to protest spending money for gifts for a person’s significant other.
- The irrelevance of Valentine’s Day. Some people perceive Valentine’s Day to be just another day in the calendar, marked red for some unknown reason. They view Valentine’s Day as unproductive, and for people to focus just on love and not on the other more important things in life.
To best enjoy Singles Awareness Day, you have to find enjoyable things to do on your own. You do not need to be reminded and tortured by the idea that you’re in the minority on Valentine’s Day just because you’re single, or because you don’t have a date.
Stay Away from Valentine’s Hotspots
To best enjoy Singles Awareness Day, you have to stay away from places where couples gather to date and celebrate their relationships. The least you want is to see a couple reminding you of your singlehood. Here are some places you definitely want to stay away from:
- Restaurants and cafés. Chances are you won’t find empty restaurants or cafés where you can spend time on your own. Couples have already reserved tables days or weeks in advance, which makes it difficult for you to get a seat and a meal.
- Cinemas and theaters. Valentine’s Day is a time where cinemas show romantic films, and theaters present romantic plays. Stay away from these places if you don’t want the mushiness to upset you.
- Parks and carnivals. It can be irritating or even torturous to see people holding hands while walking at a park, filling up all the gondolas on the Ferris Wheel, or having a good time on the carousel.
Non-Romantic Activities
Just because the lovestruck have taken February 14 for themselves doesn’t mean you can’t have fun for your own celebration of Singles Awareness Day. Here are some ways that you can do it:
- Staying home. Why bother going out when there’s lots of fun to be enjoyed at home? Play your favorite video game, watch a non-romantic movie, or just sleep the night away. You won’t miss a thing about Valentine’s Day.
- Take a drive or a walk. Couples are so obsessed with each other that they won’t notice you on the road. Take a drive, or better yet, take a walk in a secluded place like a forest or the woods. Communing with nature is a better option than having to commune with your significant other in sappy blabber and chatter.
- Go extreme. If you’re up for some time living on the edge, try extreme sports. Bungee jumping, rappeling, wall climbing, or even surfing are great ways to have a great time without having to be with anybody for Valentine’s Day.
Singles Awareness Day Around The World
Believe it or not, Singles Awareness Day is celebrated all over the world, especially in Asia. Here are some of the ways people celebrate Singles Awareness Day:
- In South Korea, Black Day is celebrated on April 14, two months after Valentine’s Day. People eat noodles with a salty black bean sauce to comfort themselves for being single two months before.
- In China, Guang Gun Jie is celebrated on November 11. Here, people eat four sticks of fried dough along with a steamed stuffed bun, all of which symbolize the four lines and single dot in “11.11.” The informal holiday is sometimes used to make promises to end singlehood, a lot like making a New Year’s Resolution.
- In Japan and Taiwan, the Lovers Go Die Club is an informal group of people who protest romantic relationships based merely on money, sex, or having a good time. They believe that Valentine’s Day is a materialistic commercial holiday that only serves to corrupt the moral fiber of people. The club often holds protests in front of Valentine’s hotspots to spread their message.
- February 15 is often proposed to be an alternative to February 14, so that single people need not be reminded of their relationship statuses year after year.
With these tips and reminders, Valentine’s Day need not be a day of emotional torture and romantic misery. Thanks to Singles Awareness Day, you don’t need to put up with that dreaded holiday anymore.
