How to Hand Wash Clothes
Posted on June 2nd, 2009 by CarmeliaThe advent of the washing machine made doing the laundry much easier, there are still some articles of clothing that need to be washed by hand. Here’s how to hand wash clothes.
Materials
- Detergent
- Liquid fabric softeners
- Liquid bleach
- Clothespins
- Clothes dryer
- Soap laundry detergent
- Clothes scrub
- Rubber gloves
Washing White Clothes
- Separate the whites from the colored articles of clothing. This includes clothing that are predominantly white.
- Use rubber gloves to protect your hands.
- Make sure your sink is clean by making a quick rinse. Plug the sink and add 1/4 cup detergent.
- Fill the sink a little over halfway with water.
- Check the labels of your clothes for the correct water temperature. Follow the instructions.
- Add 1/4 cup of bleach in the water.
- Put the white clothing in the water and let it get wet and soaped. If you’re dealing with stains, let it soak for until 20-30 minutes.
- After soaking time is up, knead the clothes like you are kneading bread dough.
- If you’re dealing with a stubborn stain, put a bit of soap detergent on the stain and scrub with your hands. You can also use a laundry scrub to get the stain out. Be gentle, especially when you are dealing with delicate articles of clothing.
- Unplug the water to drain the sink. When the sink has fully drained, plug it again and fill with water. Rinse the clothes and let the sink drain again. Repeat this cycle until the water runs clear.
- Drain out your sink for the last time and wring out your clothes over the drain.
- Hang out your clothes to dry or have them dried in the clothes dryer.

Washing Colored Clothes
- Do the same steps as with washing white clothes, except do not add bleach into the mixture.
- If you can, try to get detergent that is appropriate for colored clothes.
