How to Get Your GED
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 by aileenIf you weren’t able to finish high school, but still want to get that diploma, why not get your GED? General Educational Development is equivalent to a high school diploma. It consists of 5 tests and each part has 800 points. You must get at least a score of 450 for each test.
Steps:
- Register. There are many testing centers, so just look for one nearby. Find out their test schedules and have yourself listed. You can go online to check for locations and schedules, or you can call the GED hotline of your state.
- Prepare for the test. You can either enroll in an online or on-campus prep school. Aside from helping you remember concepts that you have to know, a review center will be able to teach you testing strategies that you can use on testing day. You can also buy GED prep books if you don’t have time to attend a review class. Weeks before the testing day, it’s advisable to take some practice tests. This will assess if you’re ready.
- Bring only pencils, erasers and pens on the testing site. You may be asked to leave your other things outside the examination area.
What you need to know:
- Requirements vary from state to state, but you need to be at least 18 years old and not a high school graduate to qualify.
- You may be asked to present your ID with your social security number and a resident certificate when you get to your testing site.
- The tests have five parts. They are: Language Arts (reading and writing), Social Studies, Science and Mathematics.
- Results are usually released 2 to 3 weeks after you take the test.
- You need to have at least a total average of 60% to pass.
Tips:
- Be committed and serious with your review. If you really want to get your GED, work hard for it.
- GED opens a lot of opportunities. Not only is it equal to a high school diploma, but it also increases your value as a worker by 20%. Get a GED if you want to have a higher salary than the amount you’re getting now or you want a better paying job.
- On the day of the test:
- Go to the test center early. This will give you time to be comfortable and get the feel of the place.
- Relax. You won’t be able to concentrate and understand the questions if you panic.
- Breathe. If your anxiety is building up, take a deep breath and release it slowly.
- Be confident. You have prepared yourself. There is no reason to be scared.
- Read. Follow instructions and read the test questions carefully.
- Answer the easy ones first. Don’t waste your time on one question. If you don’t know the answer, just leave it blank for a while and answer it later.
Don’t fret if you didn’t finish high school. You can still go to college and get a better job even without a high school diploma. Get your GED now.
